It is done, the Plant Branch smoke stack came tumbling down

By

Well after 38 years the 1001 feet tall smoke stack is no longer.  I admit I felt a little nostalgic when it came down.  I have watched this a few times and I didn't say a word.  I just realized I didn't say a word.  You can hear Donald say WOW, you can hear dozens of people taking photos. You can hear one poor fella say "do it again, I didn't get that" who wasn't ready at 8:02 when she came tumbling down.

It is gone.

That must have been a sight to see. Lots of camera clicking going on.

Hi Tammy

That must have been something to see in person, but it's pretty impressive on video. What a change to the landscape. Was this something planned for some time? Is it being replaced?

Jeff

Sharon Lee it sure was

Jeff Dowler it had been scheduled for last weekend. Matthew pulled many GA power workers down to the Savannah area so it was postponed until today.  The plant closed in the spring of 2015 (coal plant) and they have no plans beyond demolition of the entire building and clean up of ash ponds that they have made public. Perhaps at some point a new plant will be built or the hundreds of acres could be used for a solar farm or they could at some point just sell the land.  The power company remains the owner of the lake and still produces power at the two dams that are on Sinclair... the north end that separates the two lakes Oconee and Sinclair and the south end that releases water to Oconee river.

Hannah Williams I would actually love to see it develop commercially, it would be a wonderful resort location some day and a beautiful location for one. But I'll just have to wait and see like everyone else, they aren't giving me the boardroom chatter.

Anna Banana Kruchten I'm suprised I didn't laugh out loud when he said it, but I was focused on getting the video, and actually fiddling with my phone when the blast happened so I just stopped and watched.  Camera on a tri-pod so I just stood in awe and watched.  Wish Abigail could have been there, but she got off work at 6 a.m. and was fast asleep.

Tammy Lankford,

In reading your earlier post(s) on how many folks used the smokestack as a navigational indicator...I wonder how many will now be at a loss is giving or getting directions

Such a crazy thing to watch a building or large structure going down, I have seen buildings being demolished and it is amazing to see the force to which they come down with.

I guess this is a sign or progress but as you say it is also nostalgic and bittersweet.

Lisa Von Domek In a generation I guess no one will remember it.  I remember back when there were 2, then 4, then 5, then 3, then 1 as they have gone up and down.  However my mom remembers when her uncle owned the land where the power plant now stands.

Brian England I had only ever seen it on video, in person was different and the fact that it started falling so slow and just lingered in the air was pretty amazing to me.  I am sad for the job loss, but happy about the cleaner air around the lake.

Debbie Reynolds I don't mind that it is gone like some people since the plant was already closed (more than a year ago) and hope that some day that land will be used for something else to bring revenue to our county. I do hate the job loss the plant closing caused.

Dorie Dillard it was a pretty amazing thing to see in person.  Glad I had my camera on the tri pod and I could just watch.

Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® it was pretty much one of those once in a lifetime awe moments.  Can't imagine that opportunity where I live again. I am glad I was not watching through the camera and just had it on the tri pod so I could really watch it happen.

Liz Wallace oddly enough I think I heard that on three different videos taken in three different locations. I mean really... they said at 8:00 it was going to happen and it actually occured at 8:02.  You would think people would have been ready.

Well, missy I intended to visit you "lakeside" as it's been awhile, but instead I am here smokestack side. Gotta go read all about it in your prior comments. The "commentary" was fun in the video.
