Panama City Realty Group | Happy HalloweenNow that All Hallows eve (Halloween as is now called) is upon us, I've prepared a few safety tips for children and the adults they will be chaperoning for treats :)

I hope you find them of value...

Carving that Pumpkin

  • Decorate with markers, glitter glue or paint or other art supplies. Let the kids draw the faces and leave the carving to the adults.
  • If using candles be careful. Place candlelit pumpkins on a sturdy surface away from curtains and other flammable objects and remember to put out the candles before retiring.
  • Never leave candlelit pumpkins unattended. So don't go trick or treating and leave a lit candled pumpkin alone!
  • A more modern way to light pumpkins is with flashlights, battery-operated flameless candles or glow sticks!

Get clever with costumes

  • When selecting costumes, try to select those with nich shiny, bright  colors which are easy to see at night
  • The brighter the colors the better.
  • Try to get or make one with both choose bright colors and is flame-retardant.
  • If trick-or-treating outdoors after dark, attach reflective tape to the costume or treat bag.
  • In case it's a little chilly a child's costume should be loose enough to wear warm clothing underneath
  • Try to make sure the costume does not drag along the groun which may cause tripping.
  • Avoid oversized shoes and high heels may look fun in the house, but outside may impede the fun.
  • Masks have long been a standard for costumes. However, a mask can obstruct vision. As an alternative, use kid-friendly, nontoxic makeup instead.
  • Carry flashlights or wear glowing wristbands when trick or treating after dark.

Trick or treat with care

  • Get in on the fun with the kids.
  • Always accompany trick-or-treaters under the age of 12.
  • Make sure your child knows their name, address and phone number for emergencies. You can easily pin a piece of paper with the information inside their pocket in case you get separated.
  • Older kids like to trick or treat as well, have them go with a group of friends, parents or older siblings.
  • Make sure someone in your group has a flashlight with fresh batteries.

Set ground rules.

If your child will be trick-or-treating without you, plan and discuss a familiar neighborhood route and set a curfew.

Review safety rules

  • Stay with the group
  • Walk only on the sidewalk not in the street
  • Approach only clearly lit homes
  • Never go inside a home or car for a treat.
  • Never accept rides from strangers - even if they say they are friends of your parents
  • Have your child carry a cellphone for the evening so that he or she can contact you. You can pick up inexpensive ones practically every where with limited access

For those planning to hand out treats

  • Clean up the yard.
  • Put away anything trick-or-treaters could trip over
  • Clear wet leaves, snow or other debris from the sidewalk as necessary
  • Turn the lights on, specially the front porch lights
  • Replace any burned-out bulbs
  • Control your pets.

Other Treats

Kids always want the sweet treats.  However, there are other treats you could hand out as well such as:

  • Stickers
  • Fun pencils
  • Rubber insects
  • Colored chalk
  • Other art supplies

If you're out driving on Halloween, be alert and watch for children who may run out between parked cars.

Be especially careful entering or leaving driveways and alleys.

Taking extra caution can help ensure a safe and healthy Halloween holiday for everyone.

It is a bit sad that some of the things you talk about here we never had to discuss when we were younger. Have a great Halloween.
