Sleep away camp; what is too young?

Sleep away camp, what is too young?

Like many families, we've begun to plan our summer activities.  With the price of gas, there will be no major vacation this year.  Last year I drove the kids from Missouri to Arizona to visit my family.  My husband flew to AZ a week into our trip and after a visit to Disneyland; we made our way back to Missouri.

This year we'll focus on exploring Missouri and the many opportunities we have here locally.  I've signed my 6 and 8 year old up for a two week program offered through the school district and swimming lessons.

But I am wondering; at what age are you sending your children to sleep away camp?  Thinking back, my first overnight camp was in 6th grade when I went to Girl Scout Camp.  After that trip, camps became more frequent from church camp to band camp.

In college, I spent the summers as a camp counselor at Campfire Camp Wamatochick in Prescott, Arizona.  Even though I had the older girls in the summer I can remember the 2 cabins of 1st graders thinking how young they were!  Now that I have a 1st grader, I wonder, is that really old enough for sleep away camp?  We've never experienced separation anxiety with these two, but they have always stayed overnight with family or friends.

I found this YMCA Trout Lodge and Camp Lakewood and they offer a mini camp for ages 6-8.

 (Co-ed) 4 days, 3 nights

For that first camp experience, we offer Mini Camp, a closely supervised introduction to camping with lots of individual attention. A ratio of at least one counselor per four campers is maintained. Cabin groups try out some of the camp's activities together, but kids also have the opportunity to choose a few activities on their own during Smorgasboard. Games, pony rides, arts and crafts, hiking, nature, swimming and more fill a camper's day. Understanding that this is possibly a child's first time away from home, our caring staff keeps them safe and ensures that they will have a wonderful time.

Hi Jennifer, gas prices are a thorn in my side right now, I feel our government does nothing to help us out! My children were around 11 or 12 before I would let them do an overnight camp. When they were 6 or 7 they were allowed to go to a church day camp. I am sure you all enjoyed Disneyland! I love it there as I am still a kid within me! Thanks for the post

Jennifer, my boys were active in scouts - so our scouting program had day camp for until age 12. I didn't let them do any sleep away camps until 13. But I am pretty protective anyway.  - Carla

Jennifer - My two boys went to day camp till my eldest was 11 and my young one was 8.  Then off they went to sleep away camp the next summer when my eldest was 12 and my young one was 9.  It was traumatic for me the first two days but I got over it.  The boys enjoyed themselves and were begging us to go back the following summer.

Jennifer, both of my boys have had the joy of experiencing church camp up in the Santa Cruz mountains.  I was really nervous the first year that my oldest son went because I felt that he was so young.  He had a blast, though, without any hesitations.  Now both boys look forward to it every year.  Their rule at the camp is that the kids must be at least 9 years old and getting ready to enter 4th grade.  After experiencing it, I think that is a good time to start.

Hi All:  I can remember when I was younger watching Parent Trap and wanting to spend the summer at camp.  What an adventure that would be.  The camp I worked at and the camps I would goto were only a week and then new campers would come.   I wonder if spending most of the summer at camp is as popular today as it had been in the past.

Naoma:  Just wait, it be here before you know it!

Beth:  The mountains of Santa Cruz; sounds beautiful!

Rosalinda:  Did they go for only a week or longer?

Jean and Carla:  They get to goto VBS but don't really  have an option of a day camp.  They'll be going to the YMCA day camp this year and I think they'll have a blast!  Maybe in a few years I'll let them go to overnight.  They program I mentioned sounded like a great try-it:)
