The Great California ShakeOut 2016
The Biggest Earthquake Drill in History
In 2 days, on Thursday October 20th, Californians will participate in what may be the largest earthquake drill in history.
The Great California ShakeOut will occur on 10/20 at 10:20 am (easy to remember), an event that has happened in our earthquake-ridden state for 9 years now, and has evolved into a popular earthquake preparedness event in at least 14 other states, several ShakeOut Regions in the US, and other countries around the world.
Check out the other ShakeOut regions in the US (Central US, Northeast, Southeast) – your state is likely included!
As I write this 10.5 million have signed up on the website saying they would participate, with 53 million worldwide! The purpose for the Great California ShakeOut is to educate residents on how to cope with a major earthquake, including protecting themselves should one occur.
With California considered at greater risk for earthquakes than any other state, the Great California ShakeOut, now in its 9th year (it started originally as the Southern California ShakeOut but now statewide on the 3rd Thursday of October) involves the general public, radio and TV stations, police, fire and rescue teams.
Practicing “drop, cover and hold-on” is considered highly effective in preparing people for major earthquakes and to provide protection when one occurs. The Great California ShakeOut is also about learning what not to do, like running to another room or standing in a doorway which are common myths about safety.
You can register now to participate, and check out a wealth of earthquake related resources for businesses, schools, the disabled, and much more on the Great California ShakeOut website.
Here is the information in 7 other languages about the Great California ShakeOut.
