Question: I am in the process of Feng Shui-ing my NYC apartment and I read putting plants in the bedroom is bad. Then In a video, I hear plants are good Feng Shui. What would you suggest?

The answer to this is, yes and no. How so? Looking to the scientific facts about plants, in the evening time most plants give off carbon dioxide. That is not ideal when we are sleeping. Being sure your bedroom is set up for optimal rejuvenation and healing is essential.

The exception for plant lovers out there is, if you have a larger bedroom, a small to medium sized plant could be located at a distance from your bed. Ideally, its suggested to keep the amount of plants placed within your bedroom to a minimal.

If you would like to know about which plants are most ideal for in the bedroom, a study by NASA listed English ivy as the number one air-filtering houseplant. It has an unmatched ability to absorb formaldehyde (a known neurotoxin). It’s incredibly easy to grow, and it’s adaptable. It could be a hanging or floor plant.

Another great plant to place inside your bedroom is the Perennial Snake plant. It doesn't require much light or water to thrive.  What’s most impressive about it is that it absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during the night.

Looking at plants from a Feng Shui perspective, they are also referred to as an 'activation cures.' This meaning, the plants elemental characteristics encourages growth and expansion. In the bedroom, we are seeking more Yin energy (stillness).

Where is the best place for a plant in the home? We received a bamboo plant 2 years ago as a gift for 15th wedding anniversary.

I am surprised that the emission of CO2 is enough to cause a concern, my wife emits CO2 at night too but I like to keep her in the bedroom with me.

I have a large Christmas cactus on my dresser across the room from our bed. It is amazing in Nov/Dec with all the blooms.
