Is it 'Good' Feng Shui to Keep Objects Under My Bed?

By

Question: I have a one-bedroom apartment in Sherman Oaks, CA. I read in an a Feng Shui article that its not good to store items under the bed. Since space is limited, is there a Feng Shui cure that could still allow me to keep things under my bed and not negatively impact my energy?

You always have options when implementing Feng Shui into your home and lifestyle.  You just need to be creative in how you perceive and utilize your space. While at the same time, understand the reasoning behind the Feng Shui suggestion of 'avoid keeping objects under your bed.'

To put things simple, energy rises, expands and contracts. This means, if you have a bunch of stored under the bed, it restricts energy movement (flow). Think physics.

From a Feng Shui perspective, this could obstruct your sleeping pattern because the movement of energy cannot flow evenly around, up, over and through the energy fields of your bed and self. Taking this observation to another level, certain objects are said to carry specific energy charges that could either be beneficial or not.

i.e.: shoes under the bed. Ideally, shoes are suggested to be stored closets if possible. Why? According to Feng Shui, shoes symbolize other people (could be co-workers, spouse, children, friends, etc) potentially taking advantage of you.

If you are one who keeps shoes under your bed and find that you sleep well, there is no extra worry or stress, and you do not notice other people taking advantage of you, then all is good. Again, every persons experience with Feng Shui will be unique to them.

If you need to store items under the bed, do your best to become mindful and aware of who gave them to you, what emotional content you associate with them, symbolically ask yourself; what do they represent to you? etc.

Example of Other Acceptable Items that Could Be Stored Under The Bed:

  • Extra Bedding
  • Extra Clothing
  • Extra Bath towels
  • Small amount of books (be sure the titles and content inside the books are positive)
  • If you need to keep shoes under your bed, please store the bare minimum, if possible
  • Slippers and flip flops could be the exception

Laura Cerrano This must be a difficult trade-off for apartment dwellers who find themselves short of storage space. Glad I don't have to deal with this issue...OH~! Wait! I just peered under my bed and there are dust balls! Do they count?

I respect Feng Shui principals as they relate to energy flow, but my husband just laughs at me.

My brother used to laugh at me and now he's been asking me what is 'good' feng shui since he moved into his new home.

At my roots, I'm just a dumb farmer from Indiana, in Georgia. I don't understand Feng Shui. But I was comforted in knowing that throwing stuff under the bed might be acceptable to someone.

Wow, this is interesting stuff! I usually do slip off my shoes under the bed before I go to bed. It could explain my crazy sleep habits.

Feng Shui is an art of placement.  Part of it is that one needs to declutter to allow the flow of chi/energy. However, Feng Shui goes far beyond decluttering, it also looks at the location of the home, stairs, bathrooms, numbers, missing ba gua, etc.  Having work with many clients from different background and culture, I always refer them to a Feng Shui master with their Feng Shui question.  Thank you for posting, now we know who to contact in Manhattan!

I keep some random workout weights under the bed - I wonder if they produce top much energy for sleep!

I just bought a new bed set for our master in our second home and we could have bought one with storage drawers on three sides but didn't need to. I can understand the challenges of a small efficiency in utilizing space.

It's nice that you gave alternatives to what can be stored under the bed.  Exchange shoes for linens and towels.  Good idea.

Good mornig, Laura Cerrano  I've been labeled with being OCD...and I probably am to a certain degree....I would never think of storing anythng under the bed or anywhere storage should not be....closets are for storage and there items should never touch the floor....only hung and on shelves.... there might be a correlation with feng shui ....

Hi Laura... I'd never given this issue any thought, but by the same token, I've never been in the habit of storing anything under beds.
