Lawn and Garden Care For Fall in Texas

In Texas we don’t experience winters like many areas, our weather is pretty mild. Many grasses and plants go dormant in our cooler months but it doesn’t mean they don’t require some attention. In preparing for the chiller weather here are a few tips for readying your lawn, flower beds and landscape for the change in temperatures:

Prepare your lawn

It’s always good to start by raking up your leaves. Our oak leaves have begun falling and wreak havoc on the grass by trapping in moisture and blocking sunlight. If you didn’t aerate last year, now would be a good time to do so. It loosens up the soil and makes it easier for water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the root system. When you mow keep the height at about 3 inches while the grass continues to grow.

Garden Beds - Clean Them Out

Get rid of the dead and diseased foliage. It’s time to dig up and store delicate bulbs and tubers like tulips and dahlias. It’s also time to divide any overgrown or waning perennials. A thorough weeding is recommended coupled with cutting back plants that don’t add winter interest. Put down a thick layer of mulch and don’t forget to bring delicate pots indoors.

Don’t Forget to Care for Landscaping

Don’t get crazy with major pruning...wait for the winter months. It is time to remove any dead or damaged limbs from trees and scrubs. Protect the young trees from hungry critters by clearing weeds and wrapping their trunks to protect them. Everyone asks when is a good time to plant or transplant? It would be now!! Just be sure the sapling has time to establish before cooler temperatures hit.

If you want a great look for spring, begin a comprehensive cleanup now! Remember winter can be hard on your landscape so the best thing to do is address your lawn and gardens now.

Good morning, Dorie --- like Wayne Martin, living in a condo makes my commitment to a lawn and garden a lot less involved but your handy tips will certainly be appreciated by Texans with more land to manage.

Up in our area, fall is a great time to put down lime just before the winter snows drop.  It takes the acidity out of the ground and allows for that sweet smell when the grass is cut

Hi Dorie Dillard - By the time the actual leaves fall off my trees, it is around Thanksgiving or 1st week of December.... But we get beautifly red, yellow, orange and green leaves off my Japanese Maple.  I can't put decorations up until those leaves come down!

Great post to get people thinking about fall lawn and garden care.Sedona Japanese Maple

Good morning Dorie.  Thankfully right now anyway we do not have to worry with the leaves. About one more mowing should do it for the season....

Here... a very necessary part of fall is to have the lines of the in ground sprinkler blown out...frozen pipes are broken pipes....and messy as well as expensive.
