It’s suburban Cincinnati in 1981. Things are going perfectly on Courtney’s wedding day—until the doorbell rings. The unannounced arrival of Courtney’s good-for-nothing ex-boyfriend sets in motion a comic crisis that will leave you in stitches. Lewis Black’s hilarious farce is truly a riot!
Kim Morgan Dean, right, portrays Courtney Coleman and Noah Mefford, below, portrays Ryan in GVT’s production of One Slight Hitch.
Many people know Black for the sarcastic tone of his comedy routines, seen on The Daily Show or his comedy specials. Very few know that before he was a stand-up comedian, he was a playwright. While he is not well known for his lighthearted comedy, Black’s One Slight Hitch proves to be great entertainment.
“It could be labeled a farce but contains many elements of high comedy as well as touching scenes of real emotion,” Director Kermit Medsker said.
Black provides the audience with a sidesplitting perspective of life for young adults at the time. These poignant moments seem so real because they are loosely based on personal experience. In a 2012 interview with A Contemporary Theatre, the playwright stated that he began working on this project in the early ‘80s after a former girlfriend spontaneously married her new boyfriend.
Their relationship became the inspiration for the characters Ryan and Courtney and the very different paths they chose in life. With a few well-placed political and social references and a dash of nonsense, the comedian is able to turn these life-changing decisions into a riot of absurdity and confusion, necessary ingredients for any good farce.
