Keeping Safe While Selling Your Home

By
Real Estate Agent with Myrtle Beach Homes Blog

So you finally have decided to list your Myrtle Beach home for sale and have decided on an agent to list your property with.  Congrats!  Now, let's discuss a rather serious safety issue that can happen when your home is on the market.

When you place your home for sale and the yard sign is stuck into the ground, it is also an invitation at times to unpleasant visitors to your home.  There are at times people who prey on houses for sale as easy targets for theft and vandalism.

One of the simple ways criminals try to use listings to their advantage is by simply coming up to the door & requesting a showing on the property right away.  By doing this, they catch the homeowners off guard, they allow the person in the door not knowing if they are actually interested in buying a property, or if they are just wanting to case the place for theft.

Most people who are living in a home do not have the home in show ready condition 24/7.  In fact, if you live like me with 3 kids under the age of 8, you probably need at least 2-3 hours before any showings to clean up the house, declutter, make the beds, etc.  In addition, you need to collected all the jewelry, confidential pieces of mail that came yesterday, and put away prescription bottles as well so that these items are not easy targets for a criminal to slide in their pocket.

Here's a video I recently shot explaining the unexpected showing situation when selling your home:

In closing, when selling your home, make sure to not let strangers in your home, make sure that if they show up acting as a REALTOR®, do not allow them in the home without prior notice from your agent.  Your belongings and safety is not worth the risk.

Really good advice. It is sad that we have to be so careful nowadays, but better to be safe than sorry.

So true Bob Wilkinson .  When selling your home, you need to be aware of all the scary things that could go wrong.  Being informed is key to safety.

So true Joe!  It's what we are supposed to do!  We can qualify the consumer to see if they are really ready to buy a home or just looking for something shady.

Hi Jeremy- it's so important for agents to impress this fact upon their sellers.  And, explain the "whys" to them.

The safety of their possessions is a huge reason that most sellers don't even think about.

I tell my sellers to not even answer the door if they don't know the person. We have signs, so they can instruct them to call the number on the sign through the door. Safety first.

I'd prefer they not even open the door, but that is virtually impossible at times to control.

Jeremy , this caution needs to be reiterated again & again...the most harmless looking person sometimes is the thief!  Don't open that door.
