Buying A Home Might Seem Scary, But Not Buying One, Might Be Scarier!

It might seem that buying a home is scary... but NOT buying one could prove scarier. There's NO reason to let the Halloween season spook you from buying a home this fall! There are lots of myths out there about how hard and complicated it is to buy a home these days and it's time to bust many of them. As the infographic below says "buying a home can be scary... until you know the real facts!"

Here's what you should be scared about this Halloween season and beyond if you've been contemplating buying a home and have been sitting on the fence about it because you've been scared to move forward for the wrong reasons:

  1. Home prices will continue to rise. CoreLogic's latest Home Price Index reported that home prices appreciated by 5.7% in the past year. The same report predicts prices will continue to rise at a rate of 5.3% in the coming year. The home Price Expecation's Survey's most recent report projected home values to appreciate by more than 3.5% for the next 5 years. The bottom in home prices has come and gone and home values will continue to appreciate for the forseeable future. Waiting to buy makes no sense and the cost of buying a home could be scary if you wait too long.

  2. Mortgage rates are projected to increase. Most experts predict that interest rates will begin to rise later this year. The Mortgage Bankers Association, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the National Association of Realtors are all  projecting that rates will be up by the end of 2017. An increase in rates will increase your monthly mortgage payment and reduce your purchasing power.

Hi Nina - I appreciate how you use KCM infographics and add your own local info to them. Indeed, not buying a home might well be scarier than buying one.

Lottie Kendall ~ hi Lottie... KCM stuff is great, but I do think they can be more "useful" if we write ideas "around" them in our posts.

Hi Nina Hollander While it isn't prudent for us to "project" home prices in the near-term, it is very true that in the long-term prices will have to increase because the value of the dollar will continue to decrease.

Hi Nina - the decision tree needs to look for disadvantages or doing and not doing.  And rising prices in Charlotte is a case against waiting.

Nina, I love that you provided great content to go with the infographic. I'd much rather maintain a home I own than pay someone else's mortgage. It pays off big time in the long run. Great post.

Amanda S. Davidson ~ thanks, Amanda. I think it always makes sense to provide content around a picture and not assume everyone "gets" the message in the picture as was intended.

Bill Roberts ~ hi Bill... far be it from me to project actual interest rate increases. But the time will come when those rates will go up and if they go up at the same time as home prices are rising, it really reduces buying power.

Thanks for the blog, it's a great time to buy a home now. Rates and prices will go up and since it is cheaper to buy than rent, anyone remotely considering a purchase would be wise to act. We need to communicate this to the public and this blog has done just that

Bob Betel ~ good morning, Bob... I've been "pushing" this message for a few years now as these low interest rates can't last forever and home prices keep going up. Some listen, some don't.
