Tammy- we all like to think that we don't have an issue with our ego but the points you mentioned are all ones where our egos definitely get in our way. Good points!

Ah yes! Cranium Enlargenous! It's really damaging unchecked! Avoid alchohol with Cranium Enlargenous. It makes you think you can sing and dance to, at the same time. If you have Cranium Enlargenous for more than four hours see your physician!

All of us have this one thing in common with our ego's i.e. our egos all invite themselves to everything we do whether we like it or not or agree. Think: pest!

I have talked with "top producing" agents who have waited until the last minute to take there MCE (one even had her license put in inactive status), but yet they are clueless about a new form or disclosure. Um, there is a reason for those classes!

Ego is one of the reasons so many people stop learning, thinking they know everything. I like to learn and everyday am open to learning something new. It makes life interesting.

I feel bad when folks enjoy learning. I hope to learn until my last breath!
I was at a partner seminar hosted by IBM a few years ago. I do not remember who the speaker was but I remember part of his message that competence is not linear. It is a circle and when we get overconfident we come full circle back to incompetence.

I like that !
Hi Tammy
Really liked this post. Ego can definitely be an issue, especially if that's all our clients or potential clients see and hear without any substance to back it up.

The four stages of competence:
1. Unconscious Incompetence- incompetent but unaware of your deficiencies, not learning
2. Conscious Incompetence- incompetent but aware of your deficiencies, beginning-intermediate student
3. Conscious Competence- competent and aware of your knowledge or skill, advanced student
4. Unconscious Competence- competent and unaware of your knowledge or skill, master level, subconscious action, no need to think about it, just do it
Confidence is a good trait. Overconfidence and arrogance can be damaging or even deadly. Some egos will not allow admitting a mistake or need to learn.
As an instructor, my most difficult students are the ones with a little knowledge who think they are experts. I call this "jackass disease". It is common among politicians.

Great post & I think that some of my peers just stop growing & the 'know it all' takes over. Problem is, when you don't keep up - your getting behind.
I like learning new things & like to spend a certain amount of time a week doing so. If I hear one more time from my office mates 'we don't learn as fast as you do I'll scream'. They don't try anything new at all.

Ego has nothing to do with being successful in business, you could have an ego, superior or not and still be stupid. Superior knowledge, confidence, application to circumstances with solution analysis and implementation are IMO keys to success while implementing your business plan.
When an opportunity arises, will you qualify it's potential according to your business plan or simply accept the opportunity and earn cash flow? Ego has nothing to do with a business decision to reject opportunities that do not meet your criteria.

Interesting Article! I definitely agree that there is always room to learn something new and we should always keep an eye out for new opportunities and ways to enhance our business.
At the same time- I also know that what works for someone else doesn't always work for me- so it really becomes critical to "know your business and your style" so you can focus on trying things that can work and avoiding advice that is not aligned with your style or business model.
I always seek to improve but am careful not to "try and be somebody else" as it is a sure fire way to fail.

So many of us suffer from egotism and it can be really ugly. I am much more comfortable with people who ask the questions than with those who think they have all the answers. Good post and glad that Kathy Streib shared it!

You are right there!
You just reminded me of an incident years ago, when I was an agent. Several local offices went together and rented the tapes for continuing education. I forget how many there were, but we met at different homes over the course of a few weeks to view and discuss the tapes. One broker came to the first meeting and declared that he didn't need to view the rest - he already knew all that information.
Guess who flunked the test?
