Remember and Give Thanks this November

With November, the chill in the air is colder, and the holiday season is in full swing. In the Washington D.C. Metro area, the heartbeat of America, we take the time to remember our military heroes and give thanks for what we have. Across the region there are a variety of Veteran’s Day gatherings, and Thanksgiving events to help those in need, while spending time with loved ones and others in our communities. Check out some of the ways you can remember and give thanks in November, and celebrate the good in life.

Begin the month with a community gathering at Fall Back Bethesda, on Saturday, November 5th. This is the first of what hopes to be a recurring harvest festival. Support organizations such as NIH Charities and the Bethesda Fire Department with an afternoon of fun and games, food and drink and plenty of entertainment. Everyone can do something to help others in need. November 1st through November 19th, there is a wonderful charity drive you can participate in, the 8th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets Drive. Organized by the Town of Chevy Chase, and other community groups, this year’s food drive is aimed to help those families in need due to the devastating fire this summer in Silver Springs.

You can remember our military heroes in person at any one of many wreath laying ceremonies which will take place on Friday, November 11th, in and around the Arlington National Cemetery. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Women in Military Service Memorial, and the Air Force Memorial, to name a few.

Connect with veterans as they share their perspectives through a special anthology reading event, Veterans Return Home. Put on by the Writer’s Center, on Saturday, November 12th, this free event will feature veteran authors reading passages from Retire the Colors: Veterans and Civilians on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Head over to Silver Springs on Saturday, November 19th for an annual favorite among families, the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Day Parade. Celebrate the season and bring a smile to the kids with all the community floats and parade goers as downtown Silver Springs is transformed. The parade begins at 10:00 am, so be sure to arrive early for a good spot.

I hope you enjoy some of what our region has happening in November. As we move into winter it is important to make community connections, to help others, and receive help when needed in return.  If you are looking to buy, or sell your home, make a community connection, and get the help you need.
