TEAM Hughes Real Estate School has a policy to assist students with their tuition. We try to make it as painless as possible for them because we know that there are many more expenses they will be facing as they get further into the process of getting a real estate license. We also do this because even though money is necessary to pay the bills, our first priority is passing on the knowledge we have attained over the years. We believe integrity will win out every time even though some students appear to lack it.
The other day a student asked us to hold her check for 3 days, and I was happy to do so. The next day she called to advise me she was dropping out because her fulltime job would not allow her to hold a real estate license. I suggested she finish the course for personal information with an eye toward the future, but she said no. We have a policy that is presented during our “Welcome” slide and it clearly states that no refunds will be given after the course has started. When I asked her if she remembered seeing the slide, she said sure, but if I deposited the check on the allotted day, she would make sure it bounced.
We are not in the business of making enemies nor do we enjoy confrontation. Bob and I pondered this situation, knowing full well that we could bounce the check and then turn the matter over to authorities. Our belief system that keeps us from becoming angry and unforgiving tells us that integrity will win out sooner or later. That woman did not show integrity. Was that sufficient reason for me to swallow mine and to go after her? I shredded her check.
I relay this story for one reason. The market is good right now, and human nature sometimes dictates a lack of integrity, a need to become a bit more cut-throat, and to put others’ interests second to our own. Regardless of your belief systems, I can tell you, “what goes around comes around.” This is not only a spiritual law, but it is a physical law that I’ve seen work over the years. If we operate outside of integrity, we will not be able to hide it for very long. We can fool some for a while, but not all forever (Abraham Lincoln – paraphrased).
When you are about your business, please remember that integrity will win, if not immediately, sooner or later. We at TEAM Hughes want to be known for our integrity, our concern for our students, and our ability to pass on what those students need to know. If you are planning to get a real estate license or if you need to advance your career, please let us know if we can help. That’s why we’re here!
