What Kind of Paint Should I Use for this Room?

Do You Know Your Finishes?

Well if you're anything like me, you don't have a clue.  I just know I don't like the one that wipes off the paint when you wipe down the wall or stain.  I stumbled on this info after going to Home Depot and talking to the paint Rep, and thought I would share:

So you want to make sure you pick the right finish for the room. Here are the four major finishes (oh and they have a cheat sheet in the store for you also that you can take home)

  • Eggshell: Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and dining room walls as it is easy to wash and touch up

  • Flat: Great for interior walls and ceilings.

  • Satin: The easy-to-clean nature of satin finishes makes it perfect for high-traffic areas of the home.

Semi-Gloss/Gloss: Reserve this finish for trim, molding, cabinets, kitchens and bathrooms due to its great coverage and washable, durable nature

And when you are painting your ceiling, they actually have a color that is called ceiling white.  Just remember, you can't just touch up a ceiling. (or wall)  even if you use the same color.  Time ages your skin, and your paint as well, so think of it as the skin of your walls. So if your add a touch of new paint onto old or faded paint like air or sun faded it will not look the same.

If you can avoid messing with the ceiling, leave it alone.  Otherwise plan on redoing the whole thing.

Had a roof leak?  Same thing, and before you try to paint over the stain, go get yourself some KILZ..(can or bucket) . you'll be glad you did!  It will stop the stain from bleezing back through once you do paint over the stain.

Guys are probably laughing at my post, because it's probably so simple that you expect that everyone knows this stuff already.  But there will be a few people out there who will admit to not knowing.
