Ask An Ambassador: Which Reality Do You Want Perceived?

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

You know the phrase "perception is reality".

And right now there are a LOT of people with perception issues.

The same person can be perceived as saint or demon despite the same information being available to all parties (see the recent election for perfect examples of this).

I'm having perceptions altered daily based on the way people do or don't act on social media.  Their comments might not reflect their true natures, but the perception is created regardless because that's the information we have to work with.

Most use Facebook to present the best possible image of their lives.  Seriously, when is the last time you saw someone post "here's the Big Mac and fries I'm eating"??  Yet, Chez McD's is serving billions, right?!

A large part of our success as real estate agents is determined by creating the right perceptions.  Look, we all know the public doesn't think highly of us as a trade, but we have to attract people to us or we're out of business.

How we present ourselves online is our virtual storefront.  We're selling ourselves and our services, so our interaction and presentation on social media is vital.  Your blog can demonstrate your expertise or your ignorance of your local market.  Your Facebook posts can show your ability to be rational, or that you're foaming at the mouth.  You get the drift, pick your social media venue and it can go well, or very, very wrong.

Assuming we pass the social media test with the consumer, next up is making sure our REAL persona jives with our online presentation.  Prove that you know your stuff. The clients want to know we're working for them.  Communication goes a long way towards retaining sellers in a market that isn't hot.  Buyers knowing you're looking for houses for them, making sure they get your time when they need it, these are things that go a long ways towards clients feeling you know your stuff AND you care about THEM.

Can you bring it all together?  Create the perception that really reflects who you are?  It's work, but it can be done.  And just another reason to think before hitting submit on that rant.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

Chris Ann, And it takes so little to blow up that perception.  One bad statement and it's over.

Kathleen, And you do that well!  This election cycle I've pretty much found myself in the middle, not really thrilled with either choice.  It's been more in the post-election period that I felt the need to put my opinions out there.

Lou, And I want that positive perception out there.

Kathy, I've left more comments on FB in the last week that I do in months combined.  And thought long and hard about what I had to say each time, in particular with my status updates today and last Wednesday.

Excellent point. I have a couple of rants I could post today but won't.  It serves no purpose and we don't need ANY negativity in this world anyway!

Jan, More than enough people lining up to provide that negativity without us jumping in too.  Happy to do my best to avoid being a contributor.

Liz and Bill Spear - perception is reality is just the beginning. We have to prove ourselves to that perception in front of our clients.

And I also wonder, why people 'taint' their own images by doing something online which is very silly!

Dear BLiz,

So true. I recently spoke to some old neighbors, who consider themselves old in their early 60s. I currently have a neighbor, who never talks about his age, but he appears young to me at over 80.

Praful, Yet we see it all the time, and this election season seems to have made it quite common.

Dorte, Funny how that works!  When I'm looking at pictures of the current crop of midshipmen at Annapolis, it seems like I was just there, yet 30+ years have passed.

Alison, You get the nuances in person, and people are less likely to say in person the things they'll say online.

Gita, Some discretion can save us major trouble.

I couldn't help but think while reading this worthy posting about the solid foundation one should build on in everything they do. No matter what after that, the honesty, genuineness and realness will hold if built on the rock of ages

I really like this post! Likening being online to a virtual storefront is so on target, where first impressions can speak loudly about who we are, or perhaps more importantly how people perceive us to be. We talk about the importance of first impressions with our sellers and their houses, and yet that same advice seems to be forgotten by some online.

Hi Liz and Bill - we all have a virtual store front. But not everyone makes the connection especially when I see the vitriol that some spread on Facebook.

BLiz, I really enjoyed your post. Whether we like it or not perception is reality and we need to make sure we set ourselves up to be perceived in the right way (whatever that may be for each individual). I am always very careful what I do and don't share/post on social media. Using good discretion goes a long way!

Richie, If we're true to who we are from the start, it's much easier to be genuine in person and match up with our online persona.

Jeff, No doubt, some people have made a very good impression on me online, and others....(insert the phrase about momma said if you can't say anything nice....)

Grant, The election has put some pure bile out there and it's not a good look for people.

Amanda, I tend to be pretty selective about what I'll put on my FB wall and normally avoid politics.  I have made a couple of what I consider nonpartisan and rather lengthy posts lately, but only because of how sideways things seem post election.

The sad reality is that many do not know how their on-line presence is perceived. Many are still learning that their perceived presence continues to impact them well into the future.

Lately I've had to step back a bit.  And I don't always want to just step back, but in the end... perception is what people see.
