The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society will present “Stealing Freedom along the Mason – Dixon Line” on Saturday November 19, at 1:30 PM at the Solanco Historical Archives Building at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA. Local historian and author Milt Diggins will be the presenter.
Maryland and Pennsylvania debated over the differences between slave catching and kidnapping. The arguments were punctuated with sporadic violence. The story of Thomas McCreary and his Cecil County Community provides a framework to explain the controversy between Pennsylvania and Maryland a decade before the Civil War.
Diggins wrote the book “Stealing Freedom along the Mason – Dixon Line:
Thomas McCreary, the Notorious Slave Catcher From Maryland.” He will sign and sell copies of the book at the program. Diggins also wrote “Images of America: Cecil County.”
The program will be free and open to the public. For more information visit www.southernlancasterhistory.org or cal 717 548-2679.
