Can You Drive Your Business Towards Success?

sports car in front of houseSeveral months ago Jonathan Mitchell wrote a post entitled, "Good Looking People Succeed More Often."  Surprisingly, despite the politically incorrect nature of his post, most of the comments he received agreed with him wholeheartedly.  The truth is, we are a society who, as my mother would say, "judges books by their covers."  In plain English it means, we form assumptions about people and react to them based on how they look.

What about our cars?  Do we form assumptions about people and react to them based on the automobiles they drive?  I think once again, the answer is yes.

Now I'm not saying you have to drive a Bentley.  I'd even argue that such an ostentatious car might put some people off.  I do, however, believe that it is extremely common for people to measure your level of success by the car you drive.  Furthermore, the reality is that as realtor there is a high likelihood that many of your clients will actually be a passenger in your car.

With that in mind, the questions become:

•1.        How important is the kind of car a real estate professional drives?

•2.       What does your car say about you?

•3.       Can you increase your business by upgrading your car?

Let's explore this a bit...

What do you think clients are looking for when they choose to do business with you?

I'd argue they undoubtedly want someone who is professional and more importantly, knowledgeable in all aspects of real estate.  If you, as a realtor, drive what is perceived as a "nice" car, the assumption is that you are successful and therefore must be very competent and knowledgeable in your field.

I know this line of thinking isn't necessarily true, but I do think it's accurate.

In a way, your car is just another way of marketing yourself.  It is your own personal advertisement that says "I'm successful and it's because I'm good at what I do...therefore you should do business with me."

Let's face it, we all want to do business with people who know what they're doing and are successful at it.

Can what your drive, drive your business towards more success?

The saying goes, "You are what you drive"............ Are you driven to succeed?

Everything that in the social eye personifies you as being good or GREAT. Drive up in a 78 pickup and see how many listings or sales you get. Yes it Matters!

I've always had car lust, but when I decided to go into real estate, I thought a sports car wouldn't be a good idea. I specifically chose a car that was good on gas (hybrid that gets 45 mpg city, 52 mpg hwy), had enough room for passengers (4-door with roomy back seat - my first 4-door ever) and had a built in navigation system. I think that as long as the car is comfortable, relatively new, and very clean, it doesn't matter that it's not a Porche.

I have heard it both ways... too nice of a car makes them hesitant and not nice enough makes them question.  LOL  I don't know.  I think it does matter but sometimes we can be our own worst critic at the same time.

Melody,

LOL..I need to get a new car :)  at this point I'd go for something that has great gas mileage...even if it's a little ugly.

Thank you for commenting on my post Melody.

Melody, I would agree that a clean, well maintained spacious car projects an image of professionalism. I know agents with small Coopers or pickup trucks, that to me at least, don't seem right for this business. Having a Bentley might be a little over the top.

I drive a what I like to call  Vintage 1997 Cadillac in great condition.  People definetaly look at my differently that I drive a Cadillac even though it's older.   They are great real estate cars.  Once you go Caddi you never go back!

This is a neat post! Keep up the great work

Good blog, even if it shouldn't be true.  Perception is reality, as much as we wish it weren't true -- it is.

Melody,

I feel like going out and buying a Benz after reading your blog.

I happen to agree with you on this matter because I myself subconciously think about the same thing.  If someone is driving a nice car, you assume that they are successful.  I myself was having those same thoughts about upgrading my car to not only present my level of success but just to feel good and treat myself.

Good Blog

Emanuel
