Trumping on Active Rain - Did Donald Buy The Blog? (Donald & Me Made Inman News Blog Today!)

By
Real Estate Agent with Accessibility & The Power to Advise

Is this Guerrilla Advertising or Taking Advantage of an Opportunity?

This morning my fingers tripped over the keys typing in the address for ActiveRain.com and I stumbled onto Trump University.  Hmmm...Interesting.

My first reaction was "Wow".   I had no idea ActiveRain was selling "Front Page" advertising.  I scrolled down the bold advertisement, because I was not interested in what the Trumpster was selling.   I could not find the NEXT button or CONTINUE button to take me onto ActiveRain.  I thought to myself, "Did Donald buy ActiveRain?"

Since scrolling down and looking around didn't find me the door to where I wanted to go, I looked up at the address bar.  Sure enough, "wrong address" and Donald Trump had opened up office there and was capitalizing on ActiveRain Bloggers.  http://actverain.com/.

Spellcheck is a fantastic tool.  But, there may be profitability in typos. If the ActiveRain owners purchased the misspelled domain originally and sold it to Donald, well, that was pretty smart and visionary!

This just added between phone calls:  (A little of my own investigating)

I emailed Inman News, because I thought this was real estate newsworthy:

This is what they teach you on The Apprentice?

Trump If real estate professionals are already questioning your ethics for teaching people to use their credit cards to make down payments on investment properties (see discussion on REliberation.com), do you really want to further antagonize them by "typosquatting" ActiveRain Real Estate Network? Apparently not a concern for Donald Trump (or maybe one of the people he hired through "The Apprentice"?), whose Trump University has taken up residence at actverain.com (ActiveRain.com without the i in Active). ActiveRain blogger Rhonda Ruthman ended up there the same way they hope you will -- by accident.

UPDATE: How many ways can you misspell ActiveRain? These will all take you to Trump University:

ACTIERAIN.COM
ACTIVEAIN.COM
ACTIVERAI.COM
ACTIVERAN.COM
ACTIVERIN.COM
ACTIVRAIN.COM
ACTVERAIN.COM

Where I found these variations.

--Matt Carter, Inman News

Note:  Earlier this post  was edited because I mentioned I saw Donald Trump's photo in the ad on Actverain.com. But, when I went back to the site his photo was not there.  Did I imagine that?  Does just his name invoke a picture of his face in your mind? ....Spooky.

True story: A couple of days ago, I was trying to go to MSN.com. If you notice, the "S" and the "A" are right next to each other on the keyboard.  Just as one of my colleagues / loan officers walked into the room, the into page for MAN.com popped up - a gay male porn site.

I started stuttering and stammering.

Watch out for that one folks!

Mistyping craigslist will also take you to a porn site.  Guess we know how to categorize the Donald now, huh?

Obviously they have gone to a lot of trouble to locate and purchase all the mis-spelled domains.  Now answer me this, when you are looking for Active Rain and you end up on The Donald's website, don't you know immediately that you are in the WRONG neighborhood?  How many people actually stop to read his site and buy something?  Now really is it worth it?

Kristal, Thanks for commenting.  You have some great points.

Actually, it is no trouble at all to buy misspelled dot coms (domain names).  For only a few dollars (I am talking less than $10 for one year),  you can buy a dot com (domain name) the same as Donald did.   I suppose if you really look at it in dollars and "sense", Mr. Trump has the potential of making a huge profit even if only one person signs up for Trump University by using the wrong door to Activerain.

There are websites that feature (sell) misspelled dot  (domain names), but have a disclaimer warning that the use of these misspelled dot coms (domain names) may have serious legal consequences due to possible trademark and copyright violations.

In regard to being in the WRONG neighborhood,  the Internet is a web of connected doors, each one welcoming us in a different direction.  If everyone was  firmly focused while on the Internet, there would be no use for GOOGLE AD CLICKS on the top and on the side of searchs to distract us.  Linking up and being noticed is what it seems to be all about when it comes to pro-active marketing on the Internet.

Today was a typing faux pas that have landed me on Trump turf, ...I didn't need to sign-up for Trump University, I learned about grabbing opportunities FOR FREE

(Please note, I have also found some great on-line shoe stores the same way and I did buy shoes!)

Does not have to be Donald at all. It could be an affiliate that i trying to cash in on misspeled web-addresses. Each time you sign up an affiliate get a commission out of that. This is pretty much known trickery on sarch engines. I think that Arnold Schwarzenegger bought his name and 100 of his mispellings. That was a smart move!

Martin pointed out what I've heard many times - buy your name as a domain, even if you don't plan to use it, so that noone else will. Buy misspellings of your domain name.

It really gets involved and expensive when you live in a St. city - you immediately triple the number you need, and often have to buy three of something to cover all the bases,  St   St.   and Saint.   I've never figured out why directories (including some of our most popular referral directories) don't collate all of these in one place, rather than having some in each.

It doesn't suprise me about the misspelling of AR - I'm just glad it was another real estate related site, and not a pornographic one.

I'm impressed with the Trumpster watching all avenues of growth.  The man surrounds himself with out of the box thinkers.

Rob, Even though some may get hot under the collar or possibily burned, I believe in giving the devil his due, as well.    There is always something to learn if you just open your eyes and mind.

There are many sites that prey on misspellings. A local mall's name (if you add mall to the end) will take you to a naughty site. A company I used to work for had purchased all possible misspelled sites so it would direct to the correct site.

Angela, Thanks for commenting!

I must type better than I think because I have YET trip into a "naughty site".  But, from the above mentioned, I guess there are quite a few out there.

Have a wonderful and prosperous day!

Donna,

You can buy as many domain names as you want and re-direct them to your main site VERY INEXPENSIVELY.  Ownership of sites can also be made "private" for FREE or for just a few dollars.

BE WISE.

Re-direct to your own independent site, or your leads could be picked up by your broker.

No one wants their leads "sold" back to them for a referral fee.

Best wishes and continued success! ---Rhonda

Sue,

Godaddy.com has domains for $6.95.  Shop around!

When agents are looking for ways to market, $6.95 plus maybe another $10 for re-directing is very inexpensive.

Thank you for commenting!

Sincerely,

Rhonda

PS  Your dog is adorable!  Is it a long hair Chihuahua?
