Day 6 - thankful for living in a kind-hearted City

Today I've been feeling especially thankful to be living in a City that has heart, a City full of people ready to be a positive force of good.

Heart at the Lyon St stairs, SF

I've written before about the yoga sessions that are offered, on a donation basis, at Grace Cathedral almost every Tuesday evening. These are attended by 500-600 people each week (no typo, five hundred to six hundred people). Donations are requested from those who can, and those who can't are welcomed just as warmly.

Last week many of these weekly participants came together for a special fund-raiser, Yoga for Change SF. Candle light Yoga was taught by 3 instructors for 1-1/2 hours, with all proceeds going to fund scholarship at the Grace Cathedral community pre-school.

This pre-school is a year-round program for 3-4 year olds in the community. It brings together children of all socio-economic groups, all races, speaking various languages at home. 1/3 of the children pay full tuition (and it's not cheap!!); 1/3 receive full scholarships and 1/3 pay 30%-70% tuition on a sliding scale based on ability to pay.

The full scholarships are reserved for children from disadvantaged neighborhoods like The Tenderloin, one of the poorest city neighborhoods that is just a few blocks down from the top of Nob Hill where Grace Cathedral and top hotels are located.

All the children benefit from this amazing preschool at a time when learning is critical to a child's success.

This yoga community--most of whom are in their 30s I'd guess (some in their 20s; other older. Some, like me, ancient) raised over $30,000 for the benefit of the Grace Cathedral pre-school!

If you find yourself worrying about the generation of Millennials, thinking they are lazy and self-centered, think again. Sure, they might seem dingy with their constant texting, eating out instead of cooking at home, spending money on Uber instead of the bus, but like the majority of others here in San  Francisco, they have heart and happily take steps to improve our city, for which I am truly thankful.

What a wonderfully uplifting story about your area! I would love to just SEE 500-600 people doing yoga at the same time.

Good morning, Lottie... San Francisco has always been a special city. I actually first was introduced to yoga there back in 1975.

Thank you for sharing . I love this Thanksgiving contest . It gives us a chance to reflect on the things we are thankful for. Most of us are thankful for similar things like job, family and health and our home.

Hi Kat Palmiotti - 500-600 people doing yoga sounded crazy to me until I went for the first time; now I look forward to the Tuesday nights immensely. If you click on the link in my post, you'll see where you can click to see pictures of the event--you'll see a lot of yogis!

Good morning, Nina Hollander - 1975 yoga wasn't as mainstream as today. Do you still practice?

Hi Gita Bantwal - you're right about our common core of things for which we're thankful. I've enjoyed reading some of the other little things, too, like Carol Williams   being thankful for car keys!

Hi Lottie - I have spent considerable amounts of time in the Bay area over the years, and I've always appreciate the strong feeling of community in San Francisco. It's a unique and special place for many reasons.

Hello Roy Kelley - and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and Dolores, too. I'm thankful for my Active Rain friends like you.

Hi Sharon Tara - it can be hard to make ends meet in an expensive city like San Francisco, which makes the $30,000+ funds raised by our yoga community, many of whom are quite young, all the more impressive.

Hello Dick Greenberg - I'm glad to hear you picked up on the strong feel on community here in San Francisco. It's true, and one of the reasons I enjoy living here. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

That is so cool, Lottie - what a wonderful way to raise funds for a much needed benefit to children!

And the hearts you've shared are a wonderful illustration of the San Francisco spirit. I remember seeing one at Union Square some years ago.

Enjoy your holiday!

Jeff

Hi Yolanda Cordova-Gilbert - there are some days when I'm sure only yoga keeps me sane  I definitely enjoy it. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Bob.

Hello Jeff Dowler - the hearts in San Francisco is another fund-raising project. One has been donated at each corner of Union Square, and I find others tucked around in various spaces of the city. The sailboat one here is my latest "find," at a home in the Presidio Terace neighborhood. The other one here is on the Lyon Street stairs.

Grace Cathedral pre-school is a gift to the community and had the backing of a healthy group of yoga believers and older souls who believe in promoting good health and education. I loved those hearts too! They add a special touch of love and inspiration.
