ABC Action News and its dozens of affiliates have uncovered quality complaints about big homebuilders in various parts of Florida. For instance, homeowners in Carriage Pointe in the Gibsonton Community recently sued Lennar Homes, claiming stucco was not installed according to Florida Building Code.
Josh Burnett, a Tampa attorney whose firm has filed hundreds of lawsuits against national homebuilders, says the quality issues generally involve larger builders, particularly during the 2004-2008 timeframe when homes were built very quickly. They have cut corners to ensure double-digit profits, he says.
"They're looking for the subcontractor who will provide the material and services as cheaply as possible," says Burnett.
This year, 14 Lennar homeowners have filed complaints with the Florida Attorney General's Office.
Homeowners should act quickly if they suspect a defect in a new home, according to experts. Florida has a 10-year statute of limitations for construction defects.
