You're having your best year ever. The phone is ringing off the hook, everyone wants you. You're headed for the Olympic Gold in your own world. 

Are you heady with success or heading for disaster?

 

Here are some tips for avoiding mental breakdown, when you have to have every  bit of mental/physical stamina to handle the success you have created.

Fahgetaboutit...things are going to slip through the cracks. Don't beat yourself up. Make a list, cross things off when completed; it may be small potatoes, but it still feeds the fire and is a mental pat on the back. Too many details swirling around in your head can create overload and then you become stymied and that doesn't keep the forward momentum going. 

Keep a firm foundation...you did many things to get yourself to your own personal mountaintop, but you did it by building blocks of success, whether through relationship-building, building a superb website, blog or building great teams of people, don't let it crumble. Take time to say thank you, and have some FUN! Balance is key. 

Get a "Just Say No" Button...

as you become #1, everyone is going to want a piece of you. You will have to learn to set boundaries, both business and personal. You can't be everything to everyone, even though you ARE a SuperStar! For example, let your clients know that after a certain time of day, you will not be answering the phone, texting, or e-mailing. It's okay to tell a buyer who's called at the last minute that you have such a successful business that you've got people ahead of them with scheduled appointments but you could work with them on such-and-such a day/time or that you could refer them. People are naturally DRAWN to successful people and want to part of that, because they then feel like they're working with a WINNER. 

Thank God it Happened Now...timing is everything and if you've got this tsunami of success happening, be appreciative that it is occurring NOW. After almost eleven years of doing real estate at Fishhawk Lake, I am having a tremendous year. And I am so thankful that it didn't happen earlier, because I wouldn't have been prepared enough to keep a sense of balance. Instead of imploding, I have learned through years of transactions, that "this too shall pass" whether it's a difficult client, an offer that is beyond reasonable or that everyone and his brother (including other agents out of your area) want to use you as their  REALTOR® within the next two hours!

 

Fun is NOT overrated! 

 

In listening to an NPR interview about a recent study of people who don't take vacation in the workplace, those people actually got LESS of a raise  than those who habitually took their vacations!! In other words, working too many hours and not taking the time designated to you has a negative impact on those around you. Whether it's subliminal or not, it affects attitudes toward you and your work ethic. Others look at it as if you can't get your work done. Taking vacations, even simply taking a day off without dragging your smart phone with you is exhilarating! Get out in nature, play with your kids on the swingset, jump in the pool with your clothes on, go on a rollercoaster ride with your grandkids, BE SILLY! 

Shoulda woulda coulda...things go sideways!  Berating yourself for not making it happen does no good, it's a waste of energy and only brings you down a notch. Look at how you can learn from it, no matter how small, forgive yourself (and others) and move on. Don't burn yourself out. Bats**t crazy is never a good trait.  It may not be the right time or the right person, and later you can look back on that and see WHY that didn't happen and something better always comes along! (I am a FIRM believer in this and because of that the right buyer, seller, transaction happens when it is suppposed to happen...every time).

Keep your ego in check...when you are #1, you are a target, but you could also be the one to take yourself completely out of the game if you let your own success get the best of you. 

Olympic Gold, now what?...keep striving, keep learning and growing, know that this wave will subside.  You can learn from others, but you can learn from yourself as well. Be smart about your money (as we all know it may not be steady!) and do what you love, always, because that in and of itself will be incredibly rewarding.
