Travel- we always take the less traveled road

If there is a long way there Donald and I can find it. We drive to our family's home out on the west coast every couple of years and well I am pretty sure we've taken a different path every time.  We've traveled with one child cross country and we've traveled with three children cross country. It's always an adventure. Out last visit the route went something like this:

We had planned to go to Dodge City, but it didn't work out that way, instead we traveled further north in Kansas and met up with a friend Donald knew from high school.  Then we decided to take the scenic route through the snowy 3 degree rocky mountains to Arches National Park.  That's the photo I want to share.  If you haven't been... I highly suggest it.  And if you are going to walk the "primative" path like I did around the arches then I suggest fall.  We could see snow capped mountains near by and it was just in the 40s, but that seems like perfect hiking weather to me.

This is my favorite "travel" photo from that trip (family photos excluded of course because I love my family more than an destination). But that human you can see is my Donald. He's holding the "good camera" in his hand and I snapped this with my phone. The sun was about to set, and just at the right spot to peek through a small hole in the rock formation next to an arch and I love the photo. I haven't ever taken the time to play with it in photoshop to see if I could lighten Donald up any.  But I like it in it's purest raw form. I think the best photos are not the composed ones that get the subject perfect, those that are just enough to remind you of that moment in time that you have a treasured memory of with someone you love.

And if you ever visit Arches, don't go on Monday.  And make dinner reservations well in advance just south of there in Moab, UT at Desert Bistro. The food was SO good that I didn't snap a single photo.  I had sea bass and Donald had Buffalo. Not on their regular menu, but specials that evening. But the bacon wrapped dates.... are a MUST have. And make your reservation for 8 or so because then you can linger and enjoy the great atmosphere.

I hate flying, but love road trips.  And, many times it is the roads less traveled that provided the most adventure.

I love that photo, Tammy!

CONGRATULATIONS on having this blog FEATURED in the PHOTOS group!

Oh, to be so young and carefree that you can do dinner at 8 PM and lounge about for hours, LOL. These days I'm in bed at 9 PM. ZZZZZZ. I, too, need to see the National Parks in Utah!! On my list of places to go. Although now I'm thinking I might want to explore roadcuts because I've been reading a fascinating book Basin and Range. Geology does give you a more indepth appreciation for these places.

Brian England I honestly don't know.  Saturday was a long day in the car.  That one felt like forever. I am sure we had 12 or so in the car hours that day with various breaks in the day... rest stops, look outs, lunch with Donald's high school friend, dinner and we stopped and saw a HUGE statue of Buffalo Bill somewhere.  But I drive and I don't mind driving. And if I feel like I need to stretch my legs I stop and walk around.

Thanks Gita Bantwal , we enjoy traveling around the country

Sheila Anderson I'm not sure how well I would enjoy "group" trips with a set itinerary.  I'm more of a by the seat of my pants kind of girl when it comes to what I want to see and do.  One that trip we had three "be there" things in 16 days.  One was his son's show in Tulsa, one was Thanksgiving lunch and one was brunch with a couple of AR pals in LA.  Everything else was by the seat of my pants.

I like the candidness of this photo, and you can see that your Donald is in the picture. Great snapshot of the sun in the exact spot to show through the hole!

Good evening Tammy Lankford, ,  Evelyn says I am that way. I love to travel all the back roads.  A great painting could be around the next bend.  That is a great choice for your entry into the contest.

Hello Tammy

Being a huge traveler myself I have always taken a different route to visit places I have never seen before.

Love the photo and I know exactly where this photo was taken, and you you 2 are very lucky to have been able to visit this breath-taking place.

Photography by Robert Swetz

I love the way the sun is creating the green & red orbs and the sun rays in your photo, great shot Tammy and if you look real close at this photo you can see the hole where you captured the sun coming through in your photo

You have to love travel photos...but I agree, family photos are priceless. I snapped some random ones this last week, and I know one day I'll be able to look back and with the help of that photo, be right in that moment again.

But travel photos do the same thing.

What a great and memorable trip with a great example of one of your many photographs. There is nothing that I can think of that brings a family together even closer than taking a road trip and you're stuck with each other for hours and days without normal household distractions. I'd give anything to be stuck like that again...

Those were some of the best days of my life and I'm sure you have many life experiences to count on for years to come!
