Holiday Baking - A Rainbow In The Dark
The first thing that strikes me as odd, is I have no pictures from the event to share. I can't believe it! There are always pictures...but there was so much fun and joy, I suppose we forgot to take any!
This is my entry to the Pay it Forward Challenge. I had no idea that this amazing evening would turn into a blog post, or a challenge entry. It was a special time that gave me as much as I gave.
My daughter is a gay woman.....coincidentally, so is her fiance. :) My family is filled with loving, accepting, members who love and accept each other based on who we are, period. Her fiance has struggled a bit more in her family, but they are working on it.
But this is often the exception and not the rule! So sad!
My girls have a community of LGBTQ friends and many of them have lost their places in their own families and the holidays are particularly tough on them. As a widow, I can understand what it feels like to miss those we love during the holidays.
Friday evening, I hosted a holiday party for about 28 of the girls' closest friends. All those who had no place to be for Thanksgiving itself. One of the saddest comments on this is that they were all invited to our family Thanksgiving...and none of them wanted to "intrude." No amount of prodding could convince them to attend our dinner. I suspect it was partially because they didn't want to feel like an outsider, and maybe because it would remind them of what they were missing. This tears at my heart.
So Friday evening we kicked off the Christmas Season with holiday baking at my house. A potluck dinner was followed by cookie baking, decorating and eggnog. The music alternated between Sounds of the Season and Today's Country...including a good old country line dance down the hall.
We ate left over turkey and side dishes and drank a little too much. Good thing I'm an empty-nester as I woke up Saturday with every bed, couch and air mattress filled with tired bakers.
It was incredible to wander through the field of 27-35 year-old sweeties! I would like to adopt them all.
We had a great time! Did I Pay it Forword? I think maybe THEY did!
