Home testing kits...Good bad or ugley?!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with WHISPERING PINES REALTY 20398180

The kits I am talking about are the ones that test for mold, radon and other issues we talk about.

While these can be a tool, be careful of making them as absolute truth.

I have seen false positives and false negatives in the past.

In my opinion, why waste the money, get a professional test down and get it right the first time.

And if the inspector is using an off the shelf product, I would question it!!!

Great advice William Feela - I have not seen much of an issue in my area but I know it can be a problem.

I have often wondered about the "mold" test machines.  Seems like voodoo magic sometimes.

My daughter is a environmental scientist and she uses the same radon kits that we can get. They usually don't read properly because the instructions are not followed correctly. There is to be no movement of air in the testing area so that means nobody living in that room for the days during the testing.

I have a client who is an environmental scientist. He doesn't have an opinion on how good the home test kits are. I know I asked him.

I bet there are some that are good but then always a fw knock offs that in it for the money and are cheaper.

Good morning William.  We are in negotiations now about an issue the inspector missed.  Over the counter test kits are useless IMHO.  Go to the pros who has the latest and best

Luckily, I have not seen any of these down here in FL.  I would not recommend this to my customers.

This is great advice! The same is true with blood pressure kits you buy off the shelf. This is good public awareness. Thanks, William Feela

I think that Debbie Reynolds has a good point here, some people just dont know how to use the kits.
