You May Go Broke to Be Strong

I met with a friend for coffee this morning who is going through some rough times. Despite his colorful resume, he is without a job, savings account almost gone, going through a divorce, one closing for the past nine months and have no money to keep going.
I listened..showed compassion..listened some more while thinking of the right words to motivate him. It’s not easy to lift someone up when they’re in that dark place. Last thing they want to hear is how Steve Jobs or Walt Disney but I went there.
When I first started working for Walt Disney World, I was in a class at Disney University where there are pictures and quotes by this great man all over. One that stuck with me was “If you can dream it, you can do it”. I truly believe that.
Most of us know the story of Walt Disney, he had a dream that he never gave up on and went broke more than once but he achieved his goals by not giving up and believing in his dreams and abilities.

Are we any different than Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Martha Stewart? I don’t think we are. If they did it, so can we.
The more I thought about what all these successful people had in common the more I realized they were all in that dark place, down at the bottom before they came up. In life, we won’t always be on mountain top but we must know that we can get there by working hard and believing. See, if you don’t think you will ever achieve your goals, you won’t. Don’t stand between you and your mountain top. If you want to get there, you have what it takes. You may be in that place today not knowing how you will fill up your gas tank, pay your mortgage, keep food on the table but all that can change in a New York minute. Are you willing to hang on? Are you willing to do something you’ve never done before? Do you believe in your dreams?

If you answered YES to any of the questions, today is your day. If you are a REALTOR® with nothing in the horizon, that’s OK, it’s in the past, you’re going to change that today. Here are some ideas;
- It’s the end of the year and it’s the best time to pull up all the expired listings between January-December and send a postcard. Follow up with a letter with a market update, mail another postcard and do this every three weeks.
-Start posting on Facebook. What do most people search around the holidays? Christmas trees, Christmas lights, best deals, restaurants, events. Take your camera, go out and take pictures, post them on Facebook with hashtags(#) i.e #christmaslights #christmastrees #christmasevents
Find local places that sell Christmas trees and post them on your page. Find a home with nice decorations, knock on their door to see if it would be OK for you to post a picture of their home on your FB, then use (#) with the name of the area and invite locals to see the home.
-Call your SOI and past clients just to say hello. Do not ask for business. Then send them a handwritten postcard.

These are just some ideas. You have two choices, you can either sit on your couch and feel sorry for yourself or go out there and make things happen. You don’t need someone else to lift you up, you have YOU! Start with positive affirmations even if you don’t believe or feel like it. I am beautiful..I am the best REALTOR®, there’s a seller out there who is waiting for me to list their home..I will get a listing in the next seven days..

You can do it my friends, today is not over yet but you’re going to have to work for it!

Thanks for an uplifting post! The first of many I'll be reading as an agent new to Activerain.  I live on Nantucket, a tiny island where competition is fierce (not in a bad way, but fierce nonetheless).  For some of us, it's easier to stay positive than for others.  But we all have our moments, right?  This was a nice spotlight on what it means to work hard, stay focused, assess, re-assess, trust our gut, find safe resources and ask questions, see it as a challenge not an obstacle, and to some degree--put blinders on.....meaning do not buy into the unsolicited, self-serving criticism offered by others.  CONCEIVE, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE.

Not too long ago I was in that very place as your friend. It truly is all about making the decision to just go for it. It wasn't until I put all of my energy and effort into myself and my business that not only did my circumstances begin to change, but my attitude as well. Great post and thank you for the reminder!

Been there and done that before I got into real estate. I have also spent my way into being the top agent in the state, and the plaque wasn't worth the expense.

Great words of wisdom!  I am sure many of us have been there.  If we believe, we can do it.

I have been in one of those "dark places" myself lately.  I am on the way out of it now. I picked and eventually dominated a remote market area where properties sell through quite slowly.  I have lately been building a lead base for better listings where the time on the market is around 60 days.

I woke up this morning thinking "I now have an opportunity for a NEW START."

Good morning Beth Atalay  (:  What wonderful advice!  I felt like I was ready one of my morning motivational stories or quotes.

When I started in this business, it became apparent that a strong belief in self is mandatory for success.  After spending so many years trying to encourage younsters to belief in the not yet seen - I was having to take my own advice.
Thank you for sharing!  Have a fantastic day (:

Hi Beth: Many of us go through tough times and hopefully rise back up renewed and smarter. It's a journey that ultimately we take alone but feel it is easier when you have friends, family or some type of support.

Beth Atalay - I believe that once you have accepted you are in that "dark place", you can start climbing out. Too many people are totally in denial and feel they can get out of it just like they've done so many times before. But then comes the day you can't. I have a friend who was in that dark place and, together, we were able to find a way for her to make one lifestyle change, ie, go from a very high rent to a considerably less purchase. Real estate to the rescue.

WOW!  Excellent post, Beth Atalay and great tips on getting out there and drumming up some business too!

Funny but, I honestly thought I coined that phrase - I told my boys that from the time they were little - "If you can dream it, you can do it!"  I seriously didn't know Walt Disney said that!  LOL

Great post, Beth Atalay!!! The best thing to do when you don't have much going on is to take massive action! I'm always amazed at what can happen when you just jump in and do something.   :)

Another great post, Beth.  It's so hard to be in the position that your friend is in.  I was involved in a motor vehicle crash a couple of years ago and my entire world was turned upside down.  I am still suffering the aftermath mentally, physically and financially.  Thankfully, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
