I was born in NYC and grew up on Long Island. We had a bunch of great diners growing up...always within a short drive of our home. Diners are truly a part of the fabric of the Northeast!
Since first moving to Florida to attend college I have looked for a diner that would remind me of my favorite joints up north. Many carry the word "diner" in the name, but none of the magic. I recently (and with great anticipation) had lunch at the Times Square Diner in Suntree.
Now for those of you who did not grow up on diner food, understand that a quality diner tries to mix breakfast, lunch and dinner with family style meals like meatloaf, fish & chips, steaks, fried chicken, etc...Add in some great burgers, NY specialty sandwiches and Greek specialties like Gyro's.
I decided to try the Fish & Chips because it was a special for the day. In True diner fashion the plate was over-sized and full of both fish & chips (large cut fries). It was delicious. The amount of food reminded me of my favorites in NY.
Many of the patrons were enjoying a late breakfast and the portions and quality (per those around me) was very good. The owner is a former NY'er who grew up working at a diner. He went to culinary school in Boston and definitely knows his stuff!
I will be back!
The Times Square Diner is located on the corner of Wickham Rd and Interlachen (in the Publix plaza) in Suntree, Melbourne Florida.
