Holiday Parking As A Competitive Sport

By
Real Estate Agent with Integrity Real Estate Group

It puzzles me why parking becomes a competitive sport at this time of year.  Throughout Northern Virginia the mall parking lots are loading up with holiday shoppers looking for bargains.   There are some people who need to park close to a door due to a disability (stay out of the handicap spots if you don’t have a sticker) but for the most part whether you are 10 or 30 parking spaces from the door it shouldn’t be a big deal.  Let’s face it most of us need the exercise to walk off the holiday calories.

Yet the honking of horns, the glares and obscene gestures, none of which convey Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays, are prevalent.   While you’re slowly stalking a shopper loaded with packages, I’m in the mall getting the last Ultimate Star Wars Light Saber off the shelf.

Before you head out take a deep breath.  It’s only a parking space.   And for  heavens sake don’t go Kathy Bates on us.

Oh this is so right on target. I dread going into any shopping center at this time of year, but the malls, which I avoid, at the worst. Online works just fine for me. It's less dangerous, and frustrating.

The weather just turned frigid after a very mild November.  Wear a warm coat, gloves, and try to remember where you parked it.  Did you know that Waze now has a car tracker inside the app for people like me who don't remember where it is?

No kidding!!!

My way of avoiding parking hassles is to get there early or get there late, or sometimes midafternoon!!!

Good morning Cindy Jones ,

Love the post..I too tend to let people in and seems the karma follows me around. On-line shopping alleviates this problem and I have packages that just come to my office..I love it!

I laugh at relatives that spend hours at the gym for exercise but have to park as close to the door as possible.   The longer walk would be exercise!

Thanks for the chuckle.  I can certainly understand the need to be in "the front row" if you have health issues, the weather is inclement or even folks with small children, but I live in Florida and most days, I purposely park as far away as I possible.  The issue that irritates me are the folks that block the way, sometimes for several minutes, while they are waiting for their space.

This is too relatable for us here in San Diego, were glad we aren't alone in feeling this way during the holidays.

Hi Cindy... this is not a problem unique to your area... even here in Charlotte we see this parking issue at this time of year. I realized a long time ago it's not worth stressing over.

Our local mall had a fire alarm evacuation yesterday (a 4 year old boy pulled it!)

I understand it was like a bad movie in the parking lot with everyone attempting to leave at once and no one with the Christmas Spirit.  I hear there were fist fights, fender benders, lots of sign language and absolutely nothing that children should have been a part of.  The traffic jams were legendary.  I'm so glad I decided to stay home!

Parking lots near shopping this time of year can try our patience.  Like you, I'm not worried about parking way out there.  I could use the exercise.

I prefer parking at the far end and walking - unless it's pouring down rain! Parking is easier and you're less likely to come back to a dent. And... I like to walk - that's what my legs and feet are for.

I drove down Hwy 101 today. All the exits to a shopping mall from Santa Rosa through San Jose, long lines to just get off the freeway. I can imagine the actual parking lots being jammed. What fun! I guess if you have kids it's all great fun to see the decorations and hoopla. This grandma? I'm shopping online and have the presents delivered. That way when I fly to Hawaii next week, I don't have to schlep them through all the security or cram them into overhead bins.

Cindy, it's so funny because that particular scene is EXACTLY what comes to mind when I think of people going "cray cray" over parking. However, I was proud of her moment where she didn't give away her power!!

Love that scene.. Same here. People spend time driving around for that perfect spot. I don't mind parking and waking. Why worry about getting close to the door if your not disabled or have small kids.

I work in the downtown area. It's always competitive but never a problem. All vehicles have to move every 2 hours so there is usually a spot with-in a block waiting.
