If you have lived in the Palm Springs or surrounding areas of Southern California for any great length of time, I am sure you have experienced our earthquakes. There are some basic earthquake preparations that you should make for your pets as well.

Before an Earthquake Hits

Have a plan.  If you are not home at the time an earthquake hits, make arrangements with a neighbor, friend or a family member to check on your pet and remove it from your home if the home is unsafe. You should also have a pet earthquake kit available.  Here are a few items that you will want to include in the kit:

Pet food and water supply for two to three weeks in the event you have to evacaute.

  1. Pet medications.
  2. Some type of carrier with ventilation.
  3. Proof of vaccinations.
  4. Pictures of your pet so that you can distribute them in case your pet is lost.
  5. Favorite toys etc..
  6. Litter for Indoor Cats
  7. A good supply of the normal treats they like (if you spoil your pet like I do)

Using I.D. tags, collars or electronic micro chipping is a good idea because it will enable you to locate your pet should the two of you become separated.  You should also investigate emergency temporary shelters for your pet in your area or in surrounding communities. Being organized and prepared will help you and your pet survive an earthquake or other natural disaster. Don't wait till the last minute or until its too late.

After an Earthquake

Don't leave your pet alone in the house. Take the pet with you.

  1. Provide food, water and shade for your pet.
  2. Keep a good eye on your pet so that it does not run off.
  3. If your animal's behavior changes dramatically, take it to your veterinarian or other professional.

For more information about earthquake preparedness, visit the California Office of Emergency Services at http://www.oes.ca.gov/ or the American Red Cross website at http://www.redcross.org/services/disaster%20.

Lets all make sure our precious pets are taken care of in the case of any type of emergency like an Earthquake or other Natural Disasters.

Good tips. I hate to admit it, but our dog is not accounted for in our earthquake kit. Love the picture! =)

Elaine, I live in Southwest Florida ... not too many earthquakes, but possible hurricanes. Although we get plenty of advance warning on those. So anyway ... good tips! Thanks. And the picture alone was worth it. How cute!

Elaine-I'm not in a earthquake "zone" but these are great tips for any kind of natural disaster. We have to take care of our furry babies as they depend on us...great post.

Elaine:  This is very good information, and having never lived in an earthquake zone, I would have never thought about it.  My brother is moving out to LA this summer, I'll have to share your tips with him.
