Size Does Make a Difference

Sometimes an increase in size is well worth the added expense. Think about whether increasing the size of a particular area is beneficial. For instance, larger garage openings can allow for larger cars. A bigger sink will make a difference for large pots and pans. An upgraded deck will allow for easier walking space around the seating and grill.

Forethought on Features

In the design process, think beyond the initial use. For example, if you plan to replace carpeting with hardwood flooring at a future date, the difference in height can affect the changeover from room to room or at the first step of a set of stairs. Plan the room with this in mind to reduce future labor and expense. This is also true for things such as surround sound, plumbing, central vac, and light fixtures.

Advantage of Doubles

In many cases, extras are a great feature. An additional sink in the kitchen or laundry room adds convenience. Duplicate cable outlets enable flexibility in furniture placement. Duplicate closets can limit messes yet keep items within close reach. These are merely a sampling of the wide range of possibilities that you might appreciate having in your home.

Flexibility

Think of spots in your home where you might need the flexibility to add appliances. Add outlets in those spots. For instance, a beer fridge or freezer can be necessary in the garage. Maybe you want an outlet in a bathroom cabinet for charging toothbrushes or electric razors out of sight. Outside GFI outlets are another useful amenity that you can include even if you do not have a need for it immediately.

The best way to brainstorm other useful home features is to visualize the room and how you will use it in the short term. Then imagine how that may change. What are the features that you need to accommodate each scenario. Think about special events, new appliances, toys, etc. You can also check with your contractor for other suggestions.
