A Painting - Dog 'n Mug, "Before and After"

Mishawaka, Indiana.

As an artist, I am always looking at things differently than most. I have painted several nostalgic businesses around the country.  This painting is a combination of two photos. The building, Dog 'n Mug, once a well known Root Beer car hop drive-in, closed and eventually became Dog 'n Mug. It was in operation for a few years, was sold and is no longer an eating establishment.

This painting was commissioned by the owners when they first opened and requested some changes to the painting, from the photograph.  Check out the link below to read about it.

I have been asked on occasion how I was able to create my paintings. This series shows the actual place and the final painting to show  the comparison.  Most of the paintings were made from, as many as 12 photographs taken from different angles, as well as closeup shots.  These are the before and after shots.

Hi Larry --- while I'm not familiar with Dog 'n Mug, we had a similar chain where I grew up so your painting brings back some memories.  Thanks for including the history as well as the story of how you create your paintings.

Your rendition is FAR superior to the original. What a classic scene and cars!

Your picture makes the place look much better. I'm wondering how the name came about, though.

Larry, this looks a little like Hoyt's Carry Out in Topeka, Kansas in the 60's!  I love it.

The old drive-in's have faded away. I am glad you have preserved many of them in your paintings and photos. What a great job, Larry.

There is something about artists eyes that others don't see until the end result is obvious! You are truly a gifted man. The transformation of that old photograph --- well, it's as if you could breathe new life into it just like an Architect who has the vision on a plot of dirt that hasn't been plowed.

I am humbled just to know that you exist here on ActiveRain and willing to share your creativity. Thank you.
