The Carlsbad Marathon is Sunday January 15, 2017

It’s almost the new year, and time to start thinking about 2017. And if you are a runner you may very likely be thinking about, or planning on, the famed Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon.

The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon will take place just 4 weeks from yesterday, on Sunday January 15, 2016, in Carlsbad California.

Carlsbad signThe Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are hugely popular with world class runners and new runners, as well as with viewers along the course.

What makes this event so popular, is part is the location and the course - a significant portion of the Carlsbad marathon course is along our beautiful Carlsbad coastline on historic Route 101/Coast Road (videos), otherwise known as Carlsbad Boulevard, with spectacular Pacific Ocean views and a gently rolling course with no major elevation changes.

part of the Carlsbad marathon course along the oceanThe Carlsbad marathon and half marathon both start and finish at The Shoppes at Carlsbad (formerly the Westfield Mall) but follow different courses.

Another reason the Carlsbad marathon is so popular is that you can run a world class marathon in January and not freeze your body parts!

If you’d like to get a feel for some of the marathon route take a ride with me along historic Route 101 (VIDEO)

In addition to the full marathon (registration closed midnight January 13), there will be a Half Marathon, as well as a Kids Marathon Mile held at world-famous Legoland in Carlsbad the day before on Saturday January 14, 2017.

Whether you live here in Carlsbad or are a visitor, please be aware there are some significant road closures during the event, beginning very early Sunday morning, and we’ll start seeing signs soon to remind us where they are and when.

The Health and Lifestyle Expo is Friday January 13th from 12 noon until 6 pm at The Shoppes at Carlsbad off El Camino Real in Carlsbad (just south of the 78 freeway) where the marathon and half marathon start and end. The Expo continues on Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm.

If you haven’t done so already, you can register online here.

Jeff,

So are you training for the marathon?  Or just cheering?  Great post to let folks know about it.  A

Jeff, haha ... if we continue to have freeze warnings in January the runners may risk freezing their body parts ... however, if they are running it should keep the blood rushing and keep them warm ... enough.

Jeff, I ran the Disney marathon three years ago, also in January and it was below 50 degrees and I did freeze my body parts off. Hope that doesn't happen for Carlsbad runners. Are you participating?

Hi Debbie Laity  - it IS very popular and I thnk it always selles out early. There are competitors from around the world

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  - if I can I will be out cheering, but no running for me - back issues won't allow it.

Kathleen Daniels  - time will tell. Seems to me that last year it was almost 65. Not bad for January. But if it rains it will be ugly!

Having lived in New England for many years I get that George Souto . I remember January weather all too well!

Hi Beth Atalay  - good for you.

No, I am not a runner. I don't particularly enjoy it, but even if I did it would be a challenge with my back issues. I will hopefully get to stop by to watch and cheer!

Jeff Dowler, I don't enjoy it anymore either, walking and riding works much better for me.

Hi Wanda Kubat-Nerdin

That is so true. This is one of several big athletic events here in Carlsbad and with all the competitors and visitors it brings a fair amount of business.
