South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade Float

On Tuesday, I made my way over to check out progress for the city of South Pasadena’s float entry in the 128th annual Tournament of Roses Parade.   The float site is in a tent adjacent to the South Pasadena War Memorial Building at 435 Fair Oaks Avenue.   South Pasadena has the oldest self-built float in the parade(and one of only six self-built floats in the parade out of 40 entries this year).

As I have written previously, the all-volunteer effort by South Pasadena(locally known as South Pas and not a part of the city of Pasadena) is just another effort by the city known for its small town appeal.

This year’s float is entitled “Never Give Up” and is a part of the overall parade theme “Echoes of Success”.   As is the custom, South Pasadena’s entry was chosen as part of a city-wide contest.

There wasn’t much activity when I stopped by Tuesday afternoon.  The organization’s Facebook fan page announced earlier that dry decorating (bark, seeds) had started but that this year there is not as much dry work since the float has about 85% or more fresh flowers.

Are you looking for volunteer decorating opportunities?  Click here.

I plan to stop back to take some additional photos and provide progress reports leading up to parade day.  Until then you can check out some of my posts from previous years: 2016 - 2015 - 2014

Remember the Tournament of Roses has a Never on Sunday policy so this year’s parade and Rose Bowl football game will be held on Monday, January 2, 2017.

Brian England --- Not Mickey Mouse but a turtle/tortoise crossing the finish line of a race with a hare/rabbit sleeping on a hammock between the two trees in the rear of the float.  The theme of the float "Never Give Up" with "Echoes of Success" as the overall parade theme.   Kinda like real estate and life, right?

Andrew Mooers -- no float ride for me this year but NAR did have a float in 2009(100th Anniversary of National Association of REALTORS.    A photo can be seen here.

Fresh flowers I think means there will be lots of last minute work for lots of volunteers to cover the float. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

How fun to keep an eye on the progress before the big day.  I bet they will be busy over the next week or so until the petals are assembled to the floats.

Michael Jacobs - I really like that poster of the Tortoise and the Hare in the "Never Give Up," link! There is so much that goes into making a Parade and the Tournament of Roses Parade just seems to get better every year. There sure is a lot of volunteerism, along with pride and dedication! The end result is always inspiring, fun, and breathtaking!

Thanks for your comments.  Pasadena is certainly gearing up for another fun event...this year on Monday, January seems many people are planning a four day weekend to celebrate Christmas and New Year's.

Did Doris Day start the Rose Parade tradition of Never on a Sunday? LOL. I showed your picture to my husband and asked him what is it? A bear or a mouse? We did not guess a turtle.
