You go first! No, you...

You go first! No you...

While out showing homes, what would you do once ascending the stairs to the basement to find a dirt floor, mounds of earth piled up at least 5 feet high in several places and exposed underground boulders?

Then, there's the locked door to the only room in the humongous cavernous space and the horrible smell assaulting everyone...not to mention coming face-to-face with a message like this?!

I'd be reluctant to stay there, instead, wanting to soar up the stairs, squealing with every leap like a little girl. Remaining steady is the best solution to keeping clients unflustered. Thankfully, it was vacant.

Plan ahead with escape routes. Upon entering a property for the first time, check each room and determine exit scenarios. Make sure all deadbolt locks are unlocked for easy access to the outside.

Human nature has a built-in fight or flight reflex when it comes to precarious situations. Carrying mace or a concealed weapon is assuring if one knows how to use them and is willing to do so when / if necessary.

Stay safe out there fellow professionals. Your clients are counting on it and your family and friends even moreso!

I probably would have called the police after I left if they had all kinds of dirt mounds down there after seeing the painted "HELP" on the window.

What a lovely property...but on a positive note, what a great way to make the safety message feel "real" for your readers!

My first ten years in real estate, I was pretty relaxed when it came to safety issues.  But, increasingly, it has become foremost in my mind.

Good morning Wanda.  In my former profession that would be just another day at the office.  Now however, I have to take into consideration the safety of my clients.
