Christmas, Austin Style!

By

Around Thanksgiving, Austin families like everyone else around the county begin to decorate their trees.  But not just the trees in their homes.

Maybe other cities do this as well, but I've never seen it before.  Austinites go to the busy East/West freeway in town called Capital of Texas Hwy or 360 (many major streets here have two names!) and bring their own unique decorations to random trees along the road.  These uniquely curated trees go on for miles.

360 TreesThe tree decorations are as diverse as Austin; from straight up tinsel and ornaments to homemade projects (the bee tree below), to roadside advertisements for businesses.

Then, like magic right around the new year, the designers come and remove their displays, and Captial of Texas Hwy goes back to normal for the New Year.

I've heard some people don't love this tradition, but I think it is part of what makes this city so unique; A spontaneous outcropping of individual expression.bee tree 360 What is more Austin than that!

I hope your holidays are as unique and dazzling as our display here in Texas. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi Will Hamm !  I like the way Colorado people think too!  My favorite place to visit in the summer.  We are always part of a mass exodus from Texas headed your way.

Very cool tradition Amy. Love the photos. Seems like that's something that could easily spread to other cities which would be great. Most importantly is that those who put up clean up after the new year. Have a Merry Xmas & Great 2017 Amy!

Good morning Amy Kramer ,

I love this tradition and I now see others bringing it in to their neighborhoods in Austin..so fun and festive! Families get together to design their trees and then snap their Christmas Photo in front of it! I love that!

Hi Amy, a few days ago I saw a similar surprise - a decorated tree in the middle of an open space, off of Hwy 17 to Flagstaff. It feels festive!

Thanks for reading Steffy Hristova !  You should go add another decorated tree to keep it company!

Amy, please be aware that much of the "decorations" get blown or washed off the trees soon after being placed. The ground out there is littered with bits and pieces of ornaments and glitter that ends up in Bull Creek then the Colorado River. "Don't Mess With Texas" is a long standing anti-litter tradition here, and this is completely against it. Please, don't encourage littering our roadsides.
