Build a Gingerbread House With Your Guests

What to do with holiday guests that are spending a few days? One of the best and most memorable things my kids and I did with my parents for Christmas was to spend time in the kitchen, building our very own Gingerbread House. Everyone was involved, even my Dad who never did KP duty! I'm sure it had something to do with the fact that he served in the Navy.

I'll never forget that evening of fun. All the materials were purchased in advance. After dinner and dishes were done, I turned on Christmas music and invited my family into the kitchen to help build a Gingerbread House. Everyone was surprised and excited!

Everyone participated. That evening, there was no boss in the kitchen. Dad picked up the box and read the directions. Kids started sorting through candy. Mom and dad put down the foundation and up went the walls. I started the frosting and together we built our very own beautiful Gingerbread House.

"Where we love is home -

home that our feet can leave,

but not our hearts" --- Oliver Wendell Homes

Love begins at home. Make the most of the time you have when you have it! I would do more today to make memories with the family members I no longer have. Protect the investment of the home that includes parents, grandparents, spouses, children, relatives and friends. Believe in fairy tales and make dreams come true! Never taken anyone for granted. Home is where you live. Love belongs in the home. These Gingerbread Homes were on display a year ago and they really made me realize how important it is to have a home and a family. The sweetest thing on earth is your home and family.

I haven't read any other posts this year by other ActiveRain members about building and/or making a Gingerbread House. But I did one last year (or maybe the year before). I guess I have a lot of reading to catch up on.

When it comes to making time for starting your own tradition, there's no time like the present.

Patricia,

We have never done it, but have seen many gorgeous one in our travels.  Evelyn Johnston with her husband Larry Johnston do have a gingerbread party...I love the idea and Laura Allen, Lake Tahoe - Truckee Real Estate for Sale www.TahoeLauraLuxuryHomes.com wrote about the Ritz Carlton doing one in her area...It is catching on.

Patricia,  I have not made a gingerbread house is a very long time.  Seeing all the AR posts ... makes me want to make one.

Michael Jacobs - maybe we can do an AR meetup next year and have a gingerbread party?

Hi Patricia- I have very fond memories of Gingerbread Houses.  When my nieces were young we made them and I once found miniature Gingerbread houses and we put together a village. And, I've made them with my friend's children as well.  We built more than houses but very fond memories.

I like this suggestion. Gladly, we are not hosting guests during this holiday season.

Thank you, Evelyn Johnston! The Gingerbread Houses were set up inside a Mall. They were very professionally done. I'll bet you have fun with kids! You come across as a loving woman.

Hi Patricia Feager, I've never made a gingerbread house, it would be more special if a group of friends/family participated. Beautiful quote!

Beth Atalay - Thank you! That quote was very special to me because it was my last Christmas with my mother and father and my children.I have thought about building a Gingerbread House just for me but I don't have the courage. Those memories I have can never be replaced.

Patricia, building Gingerbread houses is so fun and the memories that come with it are priceless. I felt like I was right in your kitchen as you told the story. I can picture your kids sorting the candy out and I bet they still remember it very vividly too. What great fun you had and those memories will last a lifetime!

Hi Patricia Feager , Those houses were a lot more elaborate than the ones we had at the party.  The kids loved doing it and they were all done within 2 hours.  That includes stopping to sample the building materials!
