The Poinsettia plant:  how much do you know about it?

Many people know it as widely used Christmas plant, signifying Christmas as a simple way by doing floral displays or giving them as gifts to family and friends. Th most familiar one to most people in the US is the Red Poinsettia Plant, interestingly it is indigenous to Mexico.

I never forget when I lived in Boston, MA on a cold night a friend of mine left this large and very expensive Poinsettia Plant in the car while we had dinner and when he got home he put the plant in the hallway. Sadly, the plant does not like extreme cold and when he woke up his wife was mad at him for bringing home a ‘dead plant’.

Now how many people know how the name came about?? Yes, Joel Roberts Poinsett the Ambassador from the USA to Mexico in 1825 became interested in these plants. His name is immortalized forever, because he sent some of the plants back to South Carolina and began growing the plants and giving them to friends. The rest is history.

The plant is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. As a pet lover, I understand that the poisoning is exaggerated, but why put your pets through vomiting, drooling, diarrhea and skin irritation? Why have your pest have itchiness and swelling? First there is no antidote, so why put your animals and yourself through these uncomfortable experiences?

My answer is simple avoid potential problems is the simplest formula. What is the old saying about an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

I hear people say cats are smarter than that and will not go near the plant. Seriously? Why tempt faith?

Just to be clear Diane bought a fake plant. It is not “live” and look at the interest it has generated. We are all about prevention instead of responding to a problem.

Now with that said: Merry Christmas to ALL and keep the poinsettias away from your four-legged family!

When I was a young child living in Miami we had poinsettia bushes in our front yard. For some reason I never liked them and still am not fond of them. I have been given many over the years and tend to be the lucky winner that wins them as door prizes. They must not feel loved because they always die pretty quickly.

I knew about the fact that poinsettias are toxic. There are a number other household plants that are also very toxic to animals, e.g., dieffenbachia, peace lily, lilies, oleander, arrowhead, and philodendron too. As you say, why put an animal through something that could have been avoided in the first place? Owners of pets have a responsibility to shelter and protect.

Your cat is adorable!!!

Hi, Endre. Because of the health issues it can cause with my pets, I won't have one of these in my house. They are very nice, but I love my pets too much to cause them distress.

My grandmother use to have the most beautiful Poinsettia plants. I enjoyed them as a kid, and I still enjoy, but you won't find one in my house.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Great information on the Poinsettia - I did not know their origin either, Endre Barath, Jr.!  I did keep my Peace Lilys and Poinsettias out of reach from my pets (cat and dogs) but, they don't go near them (they're all adults now!), thankfully!  In fact, they avoid them when they walk past - I think there's an odor to the plants that they don't like.

Endre, when I saw the picture of the cats with their faces in the plant, I will admit to getting a little nervous.  Even a little toxic can be a lot to clean up. Glad it's plastic!

I love poinsettias!  Did not get any this year because I was gone much of the holiday season.  I missed them.  Glad you found a pet friendly solution!
