The Drive to Mauna Kea Summit on a Gravel Road

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

Now, if you ask my husband, he will say the drive down from the Mauna Kea Summit was the most terrifying, but that's because he wasn't driving. He was putting his foot on the imaginery brake and reminding me about approaching curves. He also brought up the time I drove down the mountainside in Colorado in my 1974 CJ5 Jeep and asked me please not to repeat that episode.

On the other hand, I would say that driving up was more frightening, if it's scary, and it sorta was. But that's part of the excitement of driving up to the snowy Summit, you know, it's the whole package. You can see all of the fabulous photographs and read more about my adventure in my personal blog today at this link: Road to Mauna Kea Summit Opens Before Christmas.

Hi Elizabet- it reminds me of the time my husband drove across the bridge at Royal Gorge in Colorado.  I thought I was doing ok until I realized that we had to cross it again to get back to where we needed to go. You're braver than I am.

It does sound thrilling and all those roads never have enough guard rails.

Elizabeth, Those roads can be scary.  Most expecially for a passenger. Drivers for the most part ... we got it.

I have always been amazed at how much more wide open space their is on the Big Island of Hawaii, in comparison to the other Hawaiian islands.

Happy Holidays to you and Adam, Elizabeth!

It is odd that only Hella Rothwell pointed out to me that the link in this blog did not go to the place it was intended to go. In any case, I have fixed the link, and it does indeed take you to a personal story, including 11 photos I shot of the snow in Hawaii, telescopes and Mauna Kea observatories at Mauna Kea Summit.

Great photos, Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents . People can't believe how cold it gets up there. And the lack of oxygen always gets me; I need to walk very slowly and make myself hyperventilate. The view is sensational including over to Haleakala on Maui. Good for you for making the treck and Adam seems to have gotten into the spirit making that teeny snowman. Mele Kalikimaka.

Hi Elizabeth --- I will need to live vicariously through your photos as I'm not fond of those kinds of roads either as a driver or passenger.   Even the road to Hana was a bit too treacherous for me --- yeah, I guess I'm a wimp and now the world knows it.

@Michael, perhaps you may recall the Road to Hana from Wailea from a few years back. I was sicker than a dog, collapsed in the front row for most of the trip. Motion sickness.

Hella Mitschke Rothwell Adam has the greatest sense of humor. He always makes me laugh, and that's a good quality in a husband.

Well, that was last year, LOL. And i realized after I wrote the blog and posted all of those photographs that the name had been changed. Mauna Kea meant mountain white. But Maunakea is the name used today. Mauna means mountain and they say it is an abbreviation of mauna o wakea, which connects the mountain to the father sky and is considered sacred.
