2016 Annual La Jolla Cove Swim Club

Polar Bear Swim - La Jolla Shores

I admire those who jump in the cold ocean in the middle of winter, or parade around on a chilly beach in a bathing suit. Not for me! And while they call it the Polar Bear Swim diehards from much colder states – I’m thinking MN, WI, ND for example -  might scoff. But it’s all relative, and still a shock for the system!

Sunday January 1st is the date for the annual La Jolla Cove Swim Club Polar Bear Plunge, accompanied by chili (suggested), soup and perhaps other warm foods as a complement, with cider and coffee to be provided.

La Jolla Cove Swim ClubThe polar bear plunge is held at Kellogg Park in La Jolla Shores to the north of La Jolla Cove, and is for La Jolla Cove Swim Club (LJCSC) members only. I would think it could be fun to watch – bring those cameras, and some warm clothes, perhaps to share?

Maybe you will even be brave enough to dip those toes in nearby!

The La Jolla Cove Swim Club polar bear swim takes place at 10 am following a group photo – check out the photos from the 2014 Polar Bear Swim. Here’s hoping for “warm” weather but projections are for low 50s. Perhaps those who like the cold would more of a winter chill.

Today, according to Surf Forecast, the sea temperature is 60. Too chilly for my taste, but not bad for polar bears or wannabes!

Brave souls, and for me anything below 80 degrees I consider to be winter temperatures.

I am a avid polar bear swimmer. Just did one Christmas night at the water temp of 37. My son and I went to Barrow Alaska to do our craziest polar bear swim at 33 degrees Jeff Dowler...

Good morning Jeff. About the only two things I like cold is the water I drink and beer.  Otherwise I'll watch and shiver with dry feet..

Good morning, Jeff... I don't even jump into waters when it's warm! This is purely a spectator sport for me!

Hmm, you admire these people?  I don't admire them, I think they are crazy, haha, but to each their own.  I have a friend that does this every year and I tell him that he is crazy, haha.

Believe it or not we have those crazy polar bear club folks out here.  60 degrees would be heaven compared to the frigid temperatures out here.  I don't know how they do it.....

There's a huge fanclub of polar bear clubbers. I've seen some jump into Lake Michigan in Chicago and it's fun to watch! I have also seen fans in Texas jump into their Flower Mound swimming pools wearing more clothing attire than the ones who jumped into Lake Michigan! I guess for some, it's just CRAZY FUN!

It's nice to know the ones in your area will be getting hot soup and beverages. They'll appreciate it!

Have a Happy and very enjoyable New Year!

Hi Belinda Spillman  - I don't even want to experience your frigid temperatures let alone jumping into some freezing body of water

Patricia Feager  - Lake Michigan certainly would provide a polar-bear-plunge worthy place. There's a big club of icy water plungers in Boston, too. The L Street Brownies in South Boston have been around since 1904 - the oldest Polar Bear Club in the US. Probably similar temps to Lake Michigan!

Happy New Year!

Jeff, I can say that I actually did this in the Pacific Ocean on New Year's Day in Vancouver, BC! Many years ago, and with 5,000 other people. There was snow on the beach--yup. A couple of shots of warm liquor (can't recall what, maybe Yukon Jack or some craziness) coffee and a "hot" attitude, along with shorts and a T-shirt and I was running for the water! There was a blind woman in the masses who was 78 I believe and she'd been doing it for several years. I danced in the ocean with a guy with a fake flamingo on his head!

Well, that one's off the bucket list!

Hi Jeff - I think that's nuts. When we were in Antarctica, Mary did a plunge, and the water there was 28° because of the high salt content. I was more than content to watch.

Jeff when ever I visit your area in the winter I love to surf.  That means putting on a wetsuit and paddling out. I always take a deep breath before I hit the water.  Now jumping in my trunks is another story.
