Over the holidays I decided to delve into Gary Keller's book The Millionaire Real Estate Agent. I had read parts of it before, but I am into systems and wanted a refresher. This book provides alot of insight from highly successful agents around the country. One of the directives in the book is to answer the question - The Big WHY. Why is it that I do what I do? What is the motivation, the passion, the underlying reason why I do real estate and not something else?
The Big Why for Me
I have to admit it wasn't an easy task. Most of us say it's the money. Well, that's a cop out - we all work for money, but we choose what we do for a reason or we wouldn't be doing it. So I pondered for a couple of weeks. What was it about real estate that motivated me to continue? I have three reasons that solidified in my mind. Yep, I've thought and re-thought and this is it.
We live in and sell real estate in an active adult retirement community. We chose this community for the resort amenities such as golf, fitness center, walking paths, lakes and restaurants. It is like being on vacation every day of the year. But, what we didn't know when we bought and began to get involved is the lasting friendships that would be forged. We have lived in many places over the years and sure, we have had friends.
But, here in Sun Lakes, Arizona, we have friends from all over the United States and Canada. Great friends that you can call on day or night if you need something. Friends that we golf with on a regular basis. Friends that drop in spur-of-the-moment to have a glass of wine or just see how we're doing. Friends that have get-togethers and invite the neighbors for a pot luck or a dinner. Friends that organize "Orphan Dinners" at holiday times when people are home without family. Friends that call you when their kids come home at the holidays to get together for a cocktail or dinner. Friends that will call you when they are on their way to the hospital in an emergency situation and neighbors gather at the hospital to cheer them on and offer a helping hand. We LOVE the lifestyle here and that makes it easy to sell real estate to others thinking about a home in an active adult retirement community. What can be easier or more enjoyable to sell than something you love and enjoy every day?
Giving Back to the Community
Because we love the community and the friendships in Sun Lakes, we are motivated to get involved in the homeowner association. I have served on the Master Planning Committee, The General Manager 2030 Task Force, as a Unit Captain, as President (with my husband) in the 18 Hole Couples Golf League and various other committees. If I were not selling real estate, I might be inclined to give up some of those volunteer positions. Selling real estate in Sun Lakes gives me a reason and motivation to give back to the wonderful community and help make it a better place for all. It also provides a nice income for which we can give back financially to charitable organizations and our Church.
A couple of years ago we started a team with another selling agent and a Licensed Assistant. It gives me great pleasure to help them build their business and see their success. I thrive on helping others become successful. There aren't many jobs where that opportunity exists. Real estate is a tough industry and helping share my successes and systems with my team gives me warm fuzzies.
So, there you have my BIG Why! What is yours? Why do you do what you do? For me, living the lifestyle, enjoying lasting warm friendships that are clients, giving back to my community and helping my team be successful are the reasons I will buckle down and work in 2017 with renewed passion. It's an easy business for burnout - don't let that happen! Figure out your Big Why and then go get em! Happy New Year from the Kolb Team in Sun Lakes, Arizona
