Tips To Organize Your Storage Closet

Storage closets often look very messy and unorganized because they hold a lot of miscellaneous and random items. It builds up over time and you suddenly realize it's overflowing and unorganized. While they might be full of a hodgepodge of items it is possible to keep them organized and attractive.

Take Everything Out and Sort All Items

By taking everything out you can then organize it into piles of “like” items. While you are removing everything from the closet take time to get rid of anything that you no longer use or need. If you haven’t used it in months chances are you aren’t going to start now so don’t hold on to it. Donate items that others could use and trash the rest.

Unorganized Storage Closet

Analyze Your Needs

Do you need any boxes or storage bins? Make sure you know what size you need prior to heading to the store. If you don’t need anything to store multiple items in start thinking about how you can keep everything in the organized groups as you put the items back into the closet. By maintaining the grouped items it creates consistency within your closet and makes it visually appealing.

Storage Closet Organization

Arrange Your Closet

It takes some trial and error before you’ll have everything back in place. As you place items in the closet take it one shelf at a time. Trying to do everything at once normally ends up leaving things looking disorganized. By taking it a shelf at a time you can organize as you go and make sure the items are arranged in a neat and tidy fashion on each shelf.

Cleaning closets out is something that we all need to do. Inevitably we accumulate “stuff” as time passes and it causes our home to feel congested and disorganized. Take it one closet at a time and complete each one before you start on another. If you need to purchase containers to help with organization be sure you measure the space you’re working with in advance.

Considering selling your home? Start the organization process well in advance. It takes time and rushing won't achieve you the outcome you're looking for. If you are in the Northern Virginia area and aren't sure where to start or what to keep and what to let go of contact Amanda Davidson Real Estate Group. We can assist you with getting your home ready for the market. We offer an in house design consultant to all of our sellers and she would be happy to help you organize your home and have it ready to make a lasting positive first impression to potential buyers.

I still have some work to do on mine. Recently I bought a bamboo shoe rack. That has helped a great deal.

Excellent post, Amanda.  I clean out my Christmas closet every year, and make a pile to donate.  I am cutting back on my decorations and give them to family, friends, charity or trash them.

This may sound crazy but when the pantry is clean and organized the food tastes better too! These are great tips and something that needs to be done frequently. It seems to be the messiest place in some of the most beautiful homes I show.

Excellent advice, Amanda. I need to do that with my shop. It's a hoarders dream come true. Where are those "Pickers" guys when you need them?

I personally have been all about going vertically upwards. I have installed various sizes of shelves and racks to maximize as much storage as I possibly could. Every inch of space is precious to me and I use them to their highest capability.
