A Recipe for Blogging
It’s been a few years since I wrote about this but the beginning of a new year of blogging might be a good time to haul it out of the mothballs of my mind.
Blogging can be a challenge.
There is always the dilemma of what to write about.
There have been many posts by members here offering excellent topics to help jog your mind. Liz and Bill Spear wrote one about summer blog topics.
For me, it boils down to 4 Es. When I write a post I hope that my post has at least one of these E’s in it
With some topics, I hope to inform the reader. Often, it’s regarding staging...what it is and what it isn’t. You have only to read a post by one of our inspectors, for example, to learn about why you shouldn’t pressure clean siding on a home by Jay Markanich or how to fix an annoying noise in your home by Charles Buell .
As I’ve often said, I learn something every day at ActiveRain. `
This is similar to educating us but posts that enlighten us usually awaken some spirit in us. A good example would be Lou Ludwig ’s daily motivational posts that give us a daily dose of food-for-thought or Paul Henderson’s daily quotes and inspirational photos.
We are so fortunate to have many members that never fail to entertain us with their posts. It could be a humorous take on a situation from Alan May or the Grab Bag from Dick Greenberg, these posts often have nothing to do with the Real Estate profession. They make us smile or smile and they give us a mental break from the day’s stress.
As in most social media, at the heart is some sort of desire to interact with your reader. Here, it is often with a question asked in hopes of an answer- “what to do if….” for example.
It’s a post that invites us in as if in a conversation or asks for our opinion. It wakes us up and makes us think.
A good post doesn’t have to have any or all of the 4 E’s. It’s your blog, and you set the tone.
Do one thing, though. The next post you read that you like, ask yourself if it Educated, Enlightened, Entertained or Engaged you.
