I truly am a man who thought I had everything. At Christmas I don't need clothes, I don't need electronics, and I usually just ask for Apple gift cards. This Christmas I had accumulated to many that it was time to redeem part of them for something. I have a MBP, and a newer iPad, and an Iphone, and an Ipod, and the Apple TV, so what now? A watch. Since they came out with version 2 it was time to buy something I haven't worn in the last decade. WTH I said to myself and why not? So I did, I went into the Oklahoma City Apple store, and lo and behold they had one I wanted with the sport band and I bought a dressier band. After all, my gift cards weren't getting any younger.
So to my surprise they baby really functions. I am not missing any calls because it vibrates my wrist and I typically have my phone on vibrate because I hate the noise. I got amusement in my life with the Micky Mouse face because it reminded me I had one as a kid in the 50's. In this current world amusement is at a premium in value. It also sported GPS so I could tell Suri where I needed to go when I walk a city. All great functions but then i discovered something wonderful and truly beneficial. Health applications.
When we are on Active Rain for instance, points become important. We all don't give them the same meaning and they do not directly relate to immediate business but they are a metric by which we gauge our commitment. The health apps are them same. I love the breathing app especially when my heart rate is pumping over problems. I do it for a few minutes and my heart rate goes down. Excuse me while I take a break, my watch just told me to stand up and walk around. I guess I was at the computer too long.
But the best is the activity app. What I do for exercise is mostly with a bike other than walking the dog. It can be an indoor spin class, or biking around the lake close to me, it can be from sit ups or push ups, or free weights and the app just reminded me I am two calories short of my daily rate I set to burn. In spin it makes me work harder since I set it for 500 to a 1000 calorie burn depending on the length of a class. This morning I pushed like crazy in a short calls to pass the 500 mark and Friday morning it will be how close to 1000 I can get.
We all need metrics to back up our passions, our fun, and our business plan. Some kind of measurement is essential because I believe that the fear of failure is a highly overrated metric or more so mislabeled. I think it is a fear of accountability when we refuse to challenge ourselves. Maybe failure is in there somewhere but until we have outrageous goals like a 1000 calorie burn in one hour it isn't about failure, it is about not reaching for the infinite, the stars, or maybe just achievement beyond even what we thought we might be capable of. So excuse me I have to talk to my watch and ask Suri if there is an application that will allow me to lose two inches off my waistline by my 70th birthday. It is a dream that I have.
