Gypsie Ann Evarts was born in Wichita Falls, Texas back in 1927. She graduated from Wichita Falls, Texas and moved to Los Angeles to study at UCLA.

In 1943 while working as a comedian in a vaudeville act a dancer, among many others she was discovered by Earl Carroll. She toured with the USO in a production of Anything Goes. In 1944 she worked for 20th Century Fox with a seven-year contract. She worked in several films and in 1953 in episode 125 she had a role in The Lone Ranger. In the 1960’s she settled into a comfortable semi-retirement as a wife and homemaker.

She died in 2016 at the age of 95. So, who is the person and why am I writing about her you may be asking yourself. Hmm, let’s see does the name Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell ring a bell, how about Phyllis Coates? Okay Ms. Kathy here you go for you see you may know her better for the role she played from late 1951 to 1953 as Louis Lane the reporter along with Jimmy Olsen and of course Clark Kent in The Adventures of Superman. Now you know the rest of the story.

I loved the first Superman series on T.V. in the 50's. I remember Gypsy easily, but George Reeves still took the cake!

Hi James- well you stumped me until I saw the name Phyllis Coates.  I have no idea how I even know that name.  But I certainly know of Superman!

How could she be born in 1927, die in 2016 and be 95 years old?

Apr 24, 2017 02:38 PM #17
Jan Anderson

Oh, I think you have her confused with Noel Neill, who also played Lois Lane. She was born in Nov. 1920 and died in July 2016, making her 95. IMDB shows Phyllis Coates as the only remaining living cast member of the original Superman.

Love the stories about the cast of Superman - what a great show that was even if Superman's costume was pretty badly constructed -
