South Pasadena Rose Parade Float “Never Give Up” Passes The Finish Line

The 128th annual Tournament of Roses Parade is now in the history books. South Pasadena with the oldest self-built float in the parade showed people that even though it didn’t win an official award the community spirit is very much alive in this city.

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Float Never Give Up

This year’s entry “Never Give Up” had about 85% or more of the surface area covered with fresh flowers(according to the organization’s Facebook page). The other percentage was comprised of dry decorating(bark and seeds).   Lots of last minute placement of flowers in vials ensured that the float impressed hundreds of thousands of people who lined up along the parade route and millions more around the world via television.  As is the custom here, South Pasadena’s entry was chosen as part of a city-wide contest.

Check out this slideshow which highlights some of the construction, decorating as well as the finished product to see part of the story of this city's entry:

Thank you for stopping by and your comments on this post highlighting the float for the city of South Pasadena which was a part of the 2017 Tournament of Roses parade on Monday, January 2, 2017.

Debbie Laity -- I did not attend this year but watched it from my living room. The photos used in this slide show were taken by me during the construction and decorating phase of the float as well as the post parade Showcase of Floats that occurred on the afternoon of the float and Tuesday, January 3.  It is an event that is fun to see at least once.

Hi Michael, I have been waiting for this. Thank you so much for posting this Blog with the South Pasadena entry. It was worth the wait.  Although I had to quickly turn the sound down on my iPad so I wouldn't freak out everybody on the beach.

Somehow, I missed the "Finish Line" float during the parade.  What a great way to end a parade!

Hi Michael.  I'm sorry the South Pasadena float was not a winner this year.  Those folks participating still have much to be proud about.

Michael Jacobs - I really like how there are still float that are made by volunteers and that they are not all professionally built!  Here's to a great parade!

Thank you very  much for stopping by and your comments on the self-built float by volunteers in South Pasadena.  This long tradition certainly brings together the city which definitely has a small town appeal.

It is still a wonderful creation even though it didn't win. And I remember you saying it was done by volunteers. Awesome with an awesome message.

Yes, Debbie Reynolds --- this and the other five self-built city floats and the one from Cal Poly Universities in this year's parade "happens" due to the efforts and the enthusiasm of volunteers.  I was speaking with one of the volunteers the day before and after the judges had been to the float tent and he said win or lose -- it's still a great time to show off the community spirt.  I'd have to agree.

You're right -- an awesome message.
