Do You Give Gifts on Christmas or January 6, Kings Day or Epiphany?
by Silicon Valley REALTOR Michelle Carr Crowe
In North America, Christmas Eve or Day is the traditional day of gift giving. However, in many Latin American countries, it is January 6, or Kings Day, also known as Epiphany.
Epiphany or Kings Day is believed to be the day when the Magi or three wise men (the kings known as Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar) visited the baby Jesus, bestowing upon him gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The traditional Christmas Carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas", refers to the actual twelve calendar days between Christmas and Epiphany.
Epiphany is also referred to as "Twelfth Night".
For many Latin American people in San Jose and Silicon Valley, as well as from Puerto Rico to Peru to Paraguay, Christmas Eve (or technically Christmas Day) is for midnight mass and feasting with the family, while gift giving is reserved for Kings Day.
