Community Guidelines help AR members become, well, a community.

The Active Rain community guidelines help Active Rain members become a community. That sounds logical, right? In the real estate industry, competition is always the elephant in the room. In smaller markets like mine, there is fierce competition, and yet, we somehow seem to be able to work together with only minor skirmishes, and they seem rare.

Now, turn that small market into a few hundred thousand high octane overly competitive real estate professionals and you have an environment for super-charged conversations with lots of fireworks and bruised egos. Unless, and that's a big unless, we all somehow are willing to adhere to a set of community guidelines that keep everyone accountable to the organization and the community. Hence, the Active Rain community guidelines.

Most of us don't need someone to explain the fair housing laws. We studied those over and over during our pre-licensing classes. They should be ingrained into our heads like breathing. But, it's not a bad thing to remind the group to not attack each other. Don't slander others. You mean someone would do that? Absolutely. Did you leave the country over the past election cycle? If you did, let me tell you, it was ugly and people were ugly. Human nature can unleash the worst in people, and without some level of law (community guidelines), chaos would rule.

So, the Active Rain community guidelines help Active Rain members become, well, a community. They also give us the guidance we may need one day to confront another member through the Active Rain system. That's the best way to solve issues rather than taking matters into your own hands. Take a minute or two to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and then become a great community asset. We can all learn from each other.

One of the things that has always amazed me about ActiveRain, is that in an industry that is sometimes thought of as cutthroat, we really don't have many skirmishes on this platform.

It continues to be a very valuable wellspring of information and camaraderie.

Hi Mike

I really enjoyed this post - how could you not, when reading about the amazing community we have. Given the number of people who participate, things run pretty well, and bad behavior really doesn't occur all that often! But the guidelines are important and everyone should be familiar with them , and do their best to adhere to them for the same of our community!

Hi Mike- I have always admired and been proud of the civility shown here.  The guidelines help remind us of the need for it.

Good morning Mike. We all need to play fair in the sandbox.  Those who we thrown sand in their eyes today may throw sand into our eyes tomorrow.

Hi Mike - Given that our membership is equal in size to a small city, it is amazing that we work and play so well together - I think we all see the value in this community and do what we can to maintain it.

Hey Mike, this is a well-written blog. I appreciate it greatly and think we all need to read through the rules from time-to-time. It's amazing how well most members behave. D
