The Active Rain community guidelines help Active Rain members become a community. That sounds logical, right? In the real estate industry, competition is always the elephant in the room. In smaller markets like mine, there is fierce competition, and yet, we somehow seem to be able to work together with only minor skirmishes, and they seem rare.
Now, turn that small market into a few hundred thousand high octane overly competitive real estate professionals and you have an environment for super-charged conversations with lots of fireworks and bruised egos. Unless, and that's a big unless, we all somehow are willing to adhere to a set of community guidelines that keep everyone accountable to the organization and the community. Hence, the Active Rain community guidelines.
Most of us don't need someone to explain the fair housing laws. We studied those over and over during our pre-licensing classes. They should be ingrained into our heads like breathing. But, it's not a bad thing to remind the group to not attack each other. Don't slander others. You mean someone would do that? Absolutely. Did you leave the country over the past election cycle? If you did, let me tell you, it was ugly and people were ugly. Human nature can unleash the worst in people, and without some level of law (community guidelines), chaos would rule.
So, the Active Rain community guidelines help Active Rain members become, well, a community. They also give us the guidance we may need one day to confront another member through the Active Rain system. That's the best way to solve issues rather than taking matters into your own hands. Take a minute or two to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and then become a great community asset. We can all learn from each other.
