Community Guidelines: Navigating on Active Rain in 2017
What are the Community Guidelines on Active Rain? What the purpose? These questions come up virtually every year around this time, thanks to our friend Lynn B. Friedman and her Challenge.
I understand about guidelines, having lived in a Communist country in my youth, then immigrating to the United States (legally), I get it about strict guidelines and their purpose. I also understand that strict enforcement of Guidelines will create resentments. Active Rain Community Guidelines are not like what I just described. They are what I consider common sense guidelines on how to play and behave on this platform.
Following the rules vs. blasting my way and creating my own rules have always been driving forces in my life. I attended Eastern Michigan University during the time when the first annual Pot-Festival was attended by Congressmen in Ann Arbor, MI. Then from there I went on to the United State Military Academy at West Point, NY and then to the University of Connecticut, I am sure you get the idea how opposite extreme influences have been my guiding force. These fantastic environments again allowed me to experience extremes in rules/guidelines, from virtually none to a very restrictive one, even to the point of instructing us how to properly shine our shoes.
Having been in the Military, followed by Corporate America to becoming an independent contractor as a Beverly Hills Realtor the winding road brought me this platform…well it took me until 2014 to read the Community Guidelines. Why did I finally read it after having been on this platform since around 2007/2008?
Well you should know by now Lynn B. Friedman my friend talked me into participating in her Challenge. Well that in turn made me realize that overall I always knew what is Right and what is Wrong and I did not need the Community Guidelines, since I have been following them pretty much without knowing what they were. Of course, with some occasional deviation and going “outside the lines”.
So, what do I think of the Community Guidelines? Instead of expanding them or maintaining them, we need to shorten them and simply use the idea of ‘…treat others as you would like to be treated by others …’ and that should be sufficient! After all we all know what is acceptable behavior.
