Choose a school in Pearland Before You Buy?

Real Estate Agent with kimfoxhomes

I understand the famous addage in real estate...location, location, location, and I truly believe it's true. But as a former school principal, I would like to add...school, school, school for those who have school aged children.

Many times clients spend months searching for the perfect home in a great neighborhood only to learn the neighborhood school has a less than stellar reputation.

I can't tell you the number of times I have had to turn parents away explaining that their child couldn't attend my school because they didn't live in our attendance zone. It always broke my heart, but the powers that be often institute this "rule" in order to keep school populations evenly distributed. But I can tell you first hand that not all schools are created equal.

For many parents, this is not an issue because they are able to fund a private school education. That's awesome! Unfortunately,  for most families in this economy, it takes 2 incomes just to make ends meet, so public school is their only avenue.

Now don't get me wrong, there are thousands of amazing public schools out there, and a good real estate agent will be able to tell you where those are. Adding this criteria may extend the search time just a bit, but having this information can make all the difference for the most important people in your life...your children. Going to a loving, nurturing environment every day that challenges children and allows them to grow as unique individuals will not only make them happy campers, but will ease your mind as you drop them off each morning.

If you are searching for a new home in or around Pearland, Texas, give me a call. I can help you find the perfect home, in a great neighborhood, with an excellent school. Yes, you can have it all, and you and your children deserve it!

Good morning Kim Fox .  Great advice.  Schools are definitely an important factor for families with children.  You, as a former school principal would sure know how different they can be.  Thanks for the post.

First of all, welcome to Active Rain.

Secondly, schools are usually what dominate a home search in our area too.  Not having kids, I have learned what schools are in demand only by what my buyers want.  I always tell buyers to check a trusted school ranking site to figure out what schools are best for them.  It's not always the top ranking schools either. Sometimes ones that aren't top ranking have a specialty program that fit like a glove.

Well said, Kim.  Most of Michigan allows what they call school of choice, which allows any student to attend any district.  My district (where I teach and live) has never accepted students from outside of our district, and for the first time next year they are limiting choice within the district because of the number of new homes being built.  There is definitely a difference even within our district as to the results different schools get, so a well-versed real estate agent will be able to help clients choose the home in the best area for their family.  I'm sure you'll do very well!  Best wishes!

Thanks for the kind words Beth Bromund . It sounds like Michigan is heading the way we are here in Texas. It will be interesting to see how this past election effects this situation. Stay warm up there! :-)
