Historically...currently.....and often usually in most markets across the country, January is "Divorce Month". The month when there are more divorce filings than any other month of the year. Many people have theories about "Why January?" and we suspect after serving this niche for a number of years that there are a combination of reasons for this occurence.
The holidays are a family time...and the spouse who is considering filing for divorce either chooses not to interrupt that time of celebration...OR decides that one more year celebrating the season with someone who is less than compatible, is one season too many and off to the lawyer's office they go to file papers.
Some spouses are more "financially calculating" and want one more joint tax return before they file their petition. Even if you were granted a divorce on December 31st, you would be considered "single" for the whole year under the current law.
Children typically are home from school before the start of the next semester....and whether they are elementary schoolers or college age, being home all the time sets a different tone for the household and one that does not welcome divorce to interrupt this break from academia.
Holidays also sometimes invite poor behavior....the relatives that come to visit...stay too long...the obligatory get togethers flavored with more alcohol than usual can tip the scales with one more argument...one more display of rude or disrespectful behavior....and result in fueling the decision to end the relationship.
Lawyers take vacations too and that may well mean less availablity at the end of the year, and the actual filing of papers takes place in January.
Whatever the reason...or combination of reasons...that uptick means an increase in business for agents who choose to include the niche of divorce as part of their practice.
We sometimes hear from other agents that working with divorcing couples means "too much drama" and they shy away from this niche. Our one on one course, DREAM, (Divorce Real Estate and Mentoring) is designed to assist agents in working in this area....and minimizing the drama as well as adding to revenue to a real estate practice.
We provide one on one coaching suited to your market to impact real estate practices in the most positive way possible...both in navigating the niche and adding to profitability.
