Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Executive | Charlotte, NC

2017 property tax rates for Mecklenburg County and Union County in the Charlotte metro area of North Carolina are now available. In North Carolina we pay property taxes once each year for the current year, anytime after the tax bill, which is typically mailed in August or September, by the end of the current year. (So if you haven't paid your tax bill for 2016, you're now officially late!)

Roy Kelley ~ thanks, Roy. Our MLS does not publish property taxes, so people are always asking what they are and/or how to calculate them.

Scott Godzyk ~ hi Scott... I often wondered if it wouldn't be easier on homeowners to be able to split their payment into two or even four instead of one big one... obviously much more maintenance for the local authorities. Have a great Saturday, yourself!

Nina, great information for your readers. I read your comment about your MLS not displaying them, I can only imagine how many times you get asked how much they are. They're in the MLS here and are paid twice a year. Hope you have a nice weekend.

Uh oh, to those that are late paying their taxes.  Mine are paid through my mortgage, so I don't have to worry about paying them, which is a good thing.

Amanda S. Davidson ~ hi Amanda, the problem was when we did pubish was that the tax records for many of our counties were not fully updated. So they make us get the "real" number from the sellers now.

Good Morning Nina Hollander, I am so lucky, 65 and old gets a discount on taxes if you are in your home for 10 years.  Not sure how much it will save me yet, but it should.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

I started out reading the county tax rates thinking they were low, and then I came upon the chart for the combined taxes in Charlotte, and wow. Your taxes are higher than ours in Sacramento. And we are re-assessed upon resale.

Further, Californians can skate for 4 years without paying property taxes. They probably publish a delinquent property tax schedule somewhere for those hoping to get lucky in a tax sale, but not in our newspaper.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents ! hi Elizabeth... I suppose the difference here is that we do not reassess upon resale or at resale value. For most people moving here from the northeast and mid-Atlantic, they love our taxes. And over the years I've worked with many a person who moved from California who always thought the taxes were quite reasonable.

Will Hamm ~ we don't have anything like that in NC. In SC after 65 they reduce the taxable value of your home by $50K, which is nice, but you won't get rich on it!

Nina, I have started warning my clients to expect a good sized increase in taxes.  With 9-10% increases in values each year for the last two years, taxes are surely going to see a large spike.
